Goal Maximize students’ world language learning
What Courses Do We Offer? We offer 31 courses across 5 languages • Complete year of online course curriculum with instructional material, interactive activities, and graded assignments
Language Levels Elementary • Introduction to the language. • Focus on learning words and phrases—not grammar! • Vocabulary acquisition is based on the diglot story. • Best to start students once they’re able to read.
Language Levels Middle School • Exact same content as High School courses • Middle School year 1 and 2 = High School year 1
Language Levels High School • 4 years of Spanish and French (Levels I-III and AP) • Level III prepares students for AP level. • Level III and AP don’t have the same number and variety of games (no games in AP) • 2 years of Chinese, German, and Latin
Language Levels Aligned to ACTFL Standards What is covered? Examples: • Pronunciation Station = listening and speaking • Realia = reading • Vocabulary blanks, Writing Practices = writing • Sentence Comparison, Grammar Hunches = grammar • Culture Video = culture
Course Information Course Structure • 180 lessons per course • Each lesson = 35 to 55 minutes • 5 lessons in a unit (Monday - Friday) • Unit pattern/weekly cycle
Weekly Cycle Each week: new vocabulary theme and grammar topic

Planning Your Next Steps Implementation and Student Use Plan • Who are your target students? • What are your program goals? • Where will students access technology? • How often will you have access to technology? • What are your start and end dates for using the program? • What are your student work expectations? • How will you address students who do not access their program regularly? • Will the Powerspeak grade become part of the students’ overall grade if this is used supplementaly?

Student Orientation How will you introduce the program to your students? • Begin by using the Getting Started video within Powerspeak • Use whole group presentation to show students how to monitor their progress • Use whole group presentation to show students how YOU will monitor their progress • Introduce “Best Practices” to students in utilizing the courseware to their advantage • Will students be allowed to use the program outside of the school day if internet access is available? • How will you assist students who have fallen behind? • What processes are in place to assist students who are struggling?
Potential Implementation Issues • Students are jumping ahead in the course • Students enroll late in the course • Students use online translators and taking tests and doing written assignments • Students speak gibberish when submitting speaking activities • Students are falling behind, they have many past due assignments
Potential Implementation Issues • Technical problems due to logistics • Students dedicate too much time to their Avatar • Students do not receive meaningful feedback • End dates are set up incorrectly • Modifications to the calendar are not set up in the correct order
Student Orientation • Use the Student Orientation presentation to introduce Powerspeak and its features • Set up student expectations before students begin work • Post student expectations in the classroom and review • Use of Student Goal Sheet to assist students in determining the importance of why they are learning a world language
How Will Students Access Powerspeak? • ILEARN LOG-IN: Log into www.ilearnnyc.net using your DOE username and password. • Students can retrieve their designated iLearn Username by entering their Student ID and birthdate. • Students are able to set their own password which can be retrieved by entering their Student ID and birthdate. So students only need a Student ID and birthdate to login. • MY COURSES: Under “My Courses” click on the name of the course with Powerspeak (Schools determine the name of this course when they set it up themselves, e.g. “Robinson French” or “9th Grade Powerspeak”) • CONTENT: Click “Content” in the navigation bar
How Will Students Access Powerspeak? • SELECT COURSE: Under the heading “Middlebury Powerspeak” click the name of the Powerspeak class you’re logging into, e.g. “Elementary French 1A” • SELECT LINK: A new window should pop up – click the link that says “Select this link to access…the name of course” • You should now be logged into your Powerspeak course.
