Example 5 450 Practice- .007 1.4 .3 .012 1.2 .036 .22 88 .05 1.234 25 3.75 6.7 Vocabulary page__ EVALUATE To find the value of an expression by replacing variables with numbers EX- a + 5= 7 if a=2 DIVIDEND The amount you want to divide (inside the division symbol) “First in line goes IN the house” Example 30/5 = 6 and 30÷5 = 6 are the same as 6 30 is the dividend 5 30 DIVISOR The number you divide by (outside of the division symbol) EX 6 5 30 5 is the divisor (he does all the work) QUOTIENT The answer to a division problem (the number on top of the division symbol) EX 6 5 30 6 is the quotient 2 IDENTIFY THE DIVISOR, DIVIDEND, AND QUOTIENT 7 14 Decimal - Method of writing fractional numbers without writing a fraction. Terminating decimal - A decimal whose digits end. Example: 0.2, -1.345 Non-terminating decimal - A decimal whose digits do not end and do not repeat. Example: pi (π )= 3.14159265. Irrational number Repeating decimal - A decimal whose digits repeat in groups of one or more. Example: 0.1818… (0.18) Division- The process of determining how many times a number will fit into another number. Written 45/9, 45 ÷ 9, or 9 45 Directions for dividing decimals by decimals 1.Change divisor to a whole number by moving the decimal point 2.The number of spaces the decimal is moved on the divisor, do the same for the dividend MATH IS FAIR, must do the same amount of moves! 3.Rewrite with the divisor as a whole number and the new dividend 4.Place the new dividend decimal on top of the house and divide. .05 4.5
