The Early Years • The Philadelphia Phillies were actually founded as the Quakers in 1883.They changed their name to the Philadelphians but by 1890 they were know as the Phillies. • They competed with the Philadelphia A’s of the American League which were their cross-town rival and lured players away from them. The Philadelphia A’s today are the Oakland Athletics.

  3. Stadiums • The Phillies started off player in what was know as the Baker Bowl before moving to Connie Mack Stadium in 1938. • In 1970 they moved to Veterans Stadium and then finally in 2004 they opened Citizens Bank Park.

  4. The Vet • The Vet as it was known was opened in 1971 and hosted the Phillies, Eagles as well as many concerts. It had a seating Capacity of 62,306 for baseball. • This stadium is important to look at in Phillies history because it is were they won their one and only World Series in 1980. • The Vet was located at 3501 South Broad street directly across the street where Citizens Bank Park is now. • The most famous part about the Vet was its uneven playing surface and the seems they used to cover up part of the field at times. It earned the surface the nickname the “Field of Seems”

  5. Citizens Bank Park • Citizens Bank Park is the current home of the Phillies and is located at One Citizens Bank Way. It was opened on April 3, 2004. • This is believed by many to be one of the nicest parks in the MLB with such attractions as Ashburn Alley and Harry The K’s restaurant located in the left field bleachers. • This Park also has some statues of Phillies legends located around the park such as Robin Roberts, Mike Schmidt, Richie Ashburn and Steve Carlton. • To get ride of the turf used at the Vet Citizens Bank Park uses Kentucky Blue Grass and has a seating Capacity of 43,647

  6. Low Times • In 1964 the Phillies squandered a 6 ½ game lead with only ten to go. They went on a 10 game loosing streak and lost the pennant by one game to the St. Louis Cardinals. • Last Season with a loss to St. Louis Cardinals on July15, 2007 the Philadelphia Phillies became the lossinginst franchise in sports with their 10,000th loss. They are the only Professional Sports team with that many losses. Earning the Phillies the title of the “Lovable Losers”. • Although being around for 125 years the Phillies have only made it to the World Series six times.

  7. Who We Listen Too. • The Phillies Broadcast team is one of the most notable in sports with such legends as Chris Wheeler and Harry Kalas. This years team also includes Gary Matthews, Tom McCarthy and Larry Anderson. • Harry Kalas is the most recognizable of these names since staring with the Phils in 1971. He received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 for his work in broadcasting.

  8. The Phanatic • The Phanatic made his debut at the Vet on April 25, 1978 in a game against the Chicago Cubs. • He normally wears a big green furry costume with a beak. He leads cheers at the games as well as doing promotional events for the team. • He was created as a salute to the everyday Philadelphia fan who has at time been know to get a little fanatical. • He even has been voted the best mascot in professional sports by Sports Illustrated and was inducted into the original Mascot Hall of Fame Class in 2005

Retired Numbers and Legends • The Phillies currently have eight retired numbers which included Richie Ashburn, Jim Bunning, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, Jackie Robinson, Grover Alexander, and Chuck Klien. • Aside from these retired numbers the Phillies as an organization have had five MVP recipients, as well as four Cy Young winners and four Rookie of the Year Winners. • The Phillies have also won back to back MVP Awards with Ryan Howard in 2006 and Jimmy Rollins in 2007.

The Whiz Kids • The Whiz Kids was the term referred to by the fans and the media about the 1950 Phillies team because of how young all the players were. • They were all brought up from the Phiilies minor league system in a move by owner Bob Carpenter to re-invent the look of his team. • Lead by future Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn the Phillies although huge underdogs won the National League Pennant that year with a game clinching home run by Dick Sislere to defeat the Dodgers. • The popularity of this team lead to the A’s moving to Kansas City and eventually Oakland.

  11. 1980 World Series Champions • The 1980 Philllies are the one and only World Series Champions in the Phillies history. • They won the NL East with a record on 91 and 71. And beat the Houston Astros in the NLCS to advance to the World Series. They beat the Kansas City Royals in the World Series. • Nickname was Cardiac Kids because of all their close games. • Notable players were Larry Bowa, Tug McGraw, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Pete Rose and Greg Luzinski.

  12. 1993 Philadelphia Phillies • After finishing in last place of the NL East the year before the Phillies took over first place on Opening Day and never let any other team catch them. • They defeated the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS and then loss in the World Series to the Toronto Blue Jays. • Famous players of this team include Darren Daulton, Lenny Dykstra, Curt Schilling, Mitch Williams, Pete Incaviglia and John Kruk. • They actually lost the World Series on a walk off home run by Joe Carter of the Blue Jays off of Phillies Closer Mitch Williams.

  13. 2007 and 2008 Philadelphia Phillies • The 2007 Philadelphia Phillies were the first team to reach the Playoffs wearing a Phillies uniform since the 1993 team went to the World Series. They trailed the Mets by 7 ½ games on September 17 only to come back and win the Division. • This historic come back gave the Phillies an opportunity to play the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the playoofs. • They were swept by the Rockies in three games. • They were lead by stars such as MVP Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Aaron Rowand, and Chase Utley among others.

  14. 08 Phils • The 2008 Philadelphia Phillies won the NL East again beating out the New York Mets in the final week of the season. • They also just wrapped up the NL Pennant and are going to be playing the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series. This will be the first Phillies team to play for a World Series title since 1993 and they have a chance to win the organization only its second World Series ever. • They are lead by stars such as Cole Hamels who was the NLCS MVP, Ryan Howard who lead the league in Home Runs and RBI’s and reigning MVP Jimmy Rollins. As well as Brad Lidge who was a perfect 41 of 41 in saves during the regular season.
