Nato Alliance: After Berlin airlift. Western European nations formed a military alliance. • Called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. • Nato pledged to support each other if a member nation was ever attacked • Warsaw Pact: 1955 Soviet Union. • Soviets including 7 satellite countries also promised military cooperation. Opposing Military Alliances
Soviet Union kept a tight grip on Eastern European countries. • Revolts • Yet Soviet Union remained under control. • Stalin died in 1953..but his successors continued his policies. The Cold War Heats up
United States and Soviet Union armed themselves, each preparing to withstand an attack. • By 1949 Soviet scientists developed their own atomic bomb. • For 40 years these 2 superpowers built up weapons. • Raised fears among people that these two countries my come into a conflict that would destroy the world.
