  2. Unification of Japan Global History / Br. Siraj • Three powerful Daimyos led Japanese unification during the 16th Century. • Oda Nobunaga • Toyotomi Hideyoshi • Tokugawa Iyeasu • Tokugawa Shoguns were able to bring all of Japan under their control and start a centralized government.

  3. Tokugawa Rule Global History / Br. Siraj • Hostage System was used to control the Daimyos. • They divided Japan into 250 hans. • Each han was ruled by a Daimyo. • By the hostage system they brought peace to Japan.

  4. Japan’s Contact with Europeans Global History / Br. Siraj Portuguese Traders and Jesuit Missionaries arrived in Japan during the 16th century. Jesuits had some Japanese converted to Christianity When some Jesuits destroyed Shinto Temples they were expelled and Japan went into isolation.

  5. Economic Changes Global History / Br. Siraj • Trade and Manufacturing started to flourish. • Edo, Kyoto and Osaka became centers of trade • Banking and paper money were introduced • In the 1700s population increased. • A Japanese merchant class gradually developed. • Peasants were affected and many became tenant farmers. • Peasant unrest and revolt happened.

Siraj • Emergence of new class system with strict rules for every class. • Warriors, peasants, artisans and merchants were main classes • Intermarriage were prohibited. • The Imperial family was above class system • Warrior class included Shogun, Daimyo, Samurai & Ronin

  10. Social Change Global History / Br. Siraj • Role of Women • Women’s role were restricted • Male heads of household had broad authority over property, marriage and divorce. • They were valued for their role in child bearing and homemaking. • Both male and female worked outside in the field.

  11. Cultural Changes Global History / Br. Siraj • Literature • New Urban fictions started to appear • “Five Women Who Loved Love” by Ihara Saikaku was one great novel. • Haiku poetry was written by Matsuo Basho.

Siraj • Theater & Art • Kabuki Theater became popular in cities. • Dealt with tea houses and dance halls of the cities. • Women could not perform in the dramas; male actors impersonated females. • New architecture developed as daimyos competed with one another to build more beautiful homes.

  13. Cultural Changes Global History / Br. Siraj • Art • Japanese ceramic pottery used borrowed ideas from Korea • Japanese also started to study western medicine, astronomy, languages and painting styles.

  14. Korea: the Hermit Kingdom Global History / Br. Siraj Yi Dynasty ruled Korea during Tokugawa rule in Japan Hanyag was the capital and political system was molded after China. It was called “Hermit Kingdom” because Yi dynasty tried to isolate it. Japanese invaded Korea in the 16th century and weakened the Yi Dynasty. Manchus forced Korea to become a subject state of China.
