  1. 2) Headends and Hubs

  2. Photovoltaic Power System for DC loads Extra High Efficiency • Photovoltaic Power System “PVPS” • PVPS is a solar/power bay system that supplies DC power directly to the battery bank and DC load. • Grid-tied, but continues to provide power in the event of an outage. • Fully integrated. • Ready for rapid deployment. • Ideal for critical loads

  3. Hybrid Power Systems - “HPS” • Hybrid Power System “HPS” • For maximum power reliability, incorporates: • Solar • Battery • And/or generator • And/or wind turbine • Designed for larger loads providing DC and/or AC output • Custom Engineering Customer AC Loads PV Array Customer DC Loads Wind Turbine(s) Alpha Group DC Power Plant: Charge Controller, Cordex (Rectifier and Inverter optional) Generator(s) Battery Bank

  4. Case Study: Leading European MSO • Purchased over 300kw of PV power from Alpha • 80% went into Office installations • Corporate and Sales • 18% went into Headend and Hub site locations but using AC grid tie power to take advantage of high European feed in tariffs • 2% Experimented with low load network powering locations. Was very hard to impossible to find locations to make this happen

  5. 3) Network

  6. Applying solar down in the network • To go fully off grid: • Pricey: $18,000+ to go full off grid and not connect to the utility, Difficult to find enough space, rights of way • Vulnerable to theft • Lots of batteries • Can be used to defer power costs • Can start to shed load for 1500$ on up • Projects in europe with one or four panels and a small charge controller • Panel installation permissions were the biggest issue • Can have a decent payback

  7. Hybrid CableUPS in a Fibernode Power Enclosure (FPE) Nodes

  8. Sell Back Buy

  9. The Choices: High Capital Cost Contract with the utility to install distribution High O&M Cost LP Generator with regular maintenance Best Life Cycle Cost Solar power system with generator backup Alpha’s HPS arrives at the site fully tested and ready for deployment. Case Study: Remote Cell or Microwave sites: Sierra Vista, AZ Cell Repeater

  10. Case Study: Low power transmission sites: Cisco Wireless Mobility Alpha Technologies Model number MPS30-48CSL is a 48VDC Uninterruptible Power Supply Supporting Cisco Aironet 1500 radios for Outdoor Mesh Networks

  11. Payback Analyses for a Photovoltaic Power System in the Caribbean

  12. System Description • $100,000 USD Estimated Upfront Cost for a 26.0 kW Alpha PVPS • Roof-Mount Racking; PV Array Tilted at a 10° Angle due South • Produces ~50,000 kWhs annually • Installation, taxes, and shipping charges not included in estimated cost

  13. Exception and Clarifications on Study • Weather data used in analysis was from Aruba. • Used various electricity rates in $0.10 increments, with an annual 4.0% cost /kWh escalation . • Assumed system would be installed at the beginning of the year. • Output degradation from the modules was estimated to be 0.5% annually. • NPV was calculated with a 7.0% discount rate over 20 years. • IRR was calculated over 20 years. • Following graphs show simple payback (revenue and costs per year) pre-taxed. Does not take inflation into account. • No costs due to taxes, shipping, installation or maintenance were included in analysis.
