  1. Collaborative Teaming CAMERON MIDDLE SCHOOL 2011-12 Lisa Pruitt Nicole Thogmartin Andi Brown

  2. School as a Professional Learning Community Just as we must hold our students accountable to higher DOK, we must also hold ourselves as teachers to higher standards. Professional education cannot be accomplished by advancing through a checklist of tasks. It is a passionate, nonlinear, and persistent endeavor.

  3. We Must Stop Pretending . . . that state standards and district curriculum guarantee all students have access to common curriculum. that having certified teachers on staff assures that all students received differentiated instruction according to their needs. that all students master content as they advance from one grade level to the next.

  4. “Old school” Philosophy One-room schoolhouse Teachers in isolation Only 10 – 15 % of students went to college upon high school graduation Bell-curve standard (some students earn A’s & B’s, most earn C’s, and some earn D’s and F’s)

  5. Current Trends in Education 60 – 65% of students go to college after high school “No Child Left Behind” legislation mandates that all students learn and holds schools accountable It is widely recognized that school failure often results in poverty, welfare, incarceration, or even death Failure is not an option

  6. What’s the Big Idea? 1. Ensuring that students learn 2. A culture of collaboration • Teaming • Collective inquiry • Continuous Improvement 3. Focus on results

  7. Collaboration vs. Teaming Culture shift Team members open to constant change Available time (in school day and on calendar) Commitment to using results; seeking and sharing methods, resources, & ideas; and learning with colleagues Demonstrating trust and respect for all voices Development of collective identity Focus on “big picture”

  8. Collaboration is more than. . . • Camaraderie – everyone gets along well, likes one another, mutual respect • Consensus – agreement, equal distribution of duties, shared viewpoints • Committee work – established systems in place for organizational duties

  9. Collaboration is . . . Systematic process in which teachers work together to analyze and improve their classroom practice Teams engaging in an ongoing cycle of questions that promote deep team learning which leads to high levels of student achievement

  10. The CMS Teams Grade Level Teams Building Content Teams District Content Teams Student Advocacy Team Leadership Team Encore Team Special Education Teams

  11. It’s not that simple! 1. What do we want students to learn? (curriculum, essential learnings, GLE’s/CLE’s, vertical & horizontal teaming, alignment) 2. How will we know when they have learned it? (common and formative assessments) 3. What will be our response if they don’t learn it? (system of prevention and intervention strategies) 4. What will be our response if they do learn it? (enrichment and extended learning) 5. Howwill we teach to ensure students learn it? (solid core instruction, differentiated instruction, research-based strategies)

  12. SMART Goal The percentage of grade level/coursestudents scoring proficient and higher in essential learning target will increase from current % to goal # as measured by the specific common assessment administered on specific date.
