IMPORTANCE OFCENSUS FOR CIS COUNTRIES: • population number and its distribution within the country are specified for particular moment of time; • main (in some cases – the only) source of information on demographic, ethno-linguisticand socio-economic characteristics of population; • possibility to get data by smallest territorial units and by small population groups; • informational basis for demographic and socio-economic prognosis for the countries and regions development; • the general population for sample surveys is formed. 2

JUNE 2014 PREPARATION TO THE ROUND 2020: Workshops for experts of CIS national statistics services MAIN TOPICS: • The Round 2010 lessons learned and prospective for the Round 2020 (methodological and technological innovations, complete census, sample surveys, administrative data, the problems and difficulties); • Suggestionsof the CIS countries for inclusion in the CES Recommendations on the Population and Housing Censuses Round 2020; • The measurement of the economically active population in the census and sample surveys (with the advice of the 19th International Conference of Labour Statisticians); • Possible ways of coordination of the CIS national statistical services in preparation of the Census Round 2020 in the Commonwealth. 15

APRIL 2015 PREPARATION TO THE ROUND 2020: Workshops for experts of CIS national statistics services MAIN TOPICS : • Suggestions on organizational and methodological principles for population censuses conduction in CIS; • Measurement of labor migration in population censuses and sample surveys; • Interstate programmes on exchange of national census results; • The draft schedule for meetings of experts of the CIS national statistical services on preparation to the Population Censuses Round 2020. 16

CONCLUSIONS • The census will retain its dominant position as the main source of information about the population; • There are serious challenges: financial issues, changing the population mentality, the need to reduce the respondents burden, the growing information needs and information technology development; • Countries are moving away from the traditional model of the "pure" census, focusing on getting information from different sources; 17
