  1. Photographer research project Lucian Perkins

  2. Basic Information • Lucian Perkins was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1953(no specific day or month given).

  3. Education • Lucian 1st began experimenting with photo journalism during his time in the university of Texas • In 1976 Perkins graduated with a degree in biology, he later went back to school to get his teaching degree. • After attending a UT exposition workshop on photography, Perkins began exploring photojournalism.

  4. His Work • He worked for both the cactus yearbook, and the daily Texan. • In 1979 he started an internship at the Washington Post • Once he established himself at the Washington Post he went on to cover many world events, including the Palestine revolution, the aphganistan, and iraq war, and the wars in Yugoslavia(Kosovo).

  5. Lucian Perkin’s style • It has been said that Perkins has a developed style that not only portrays the hopes and weaknesses of the people in his photographs but in an unconventional manner

  6. Accolades • Co-founder of interphoto • He is a two time Pulitzer prize winner. • Perkins won the world press photo of the year award in 1995 for his well known photograph of a young boy looking out a window on a bus full of refugees leaving Chechnya, Russia.

Albanians fleeing • Location and year: Kukes, Albania 1999 • Lighting: natural (outside) • Main subject and composition: The child getting through the barbed wire is the main subject in the picture because of the danger he’s currently in. • The photographers message: The photographer wants the viewer to wonder what these people are going through and why there escaping wherever they are. • Why I chose this picture: This picture got my attention because it showed me that the people in this picture were desperate enough to risk a child getting hurt which tells me that either there's a war in their country or that they are moving to a better country for a better life.

Sankai Juku • Location and year: Washington, USA, 1984 • Lighting: natural (outside) • Main subject and composition: The Japanese dancer performs a sankai juku hanging from the ropes, people watch as this isn't something someone sees everyday. • The photographers message: The photographer wants the viewer to wonder what this man is doing, and why. • Why I chose this picture: I chose this picture because its very rare when there are these types of demonstrations in the middle of a street in the U.S. and when there is there should some exposure to them.

Playful Donkey • Location and year: Kuwait, 1991 • Lighting: natural (outside) • Main Subject and Composition: A donkey playfully tossing around while covered in oil because of the iraqi troops who set the oil fields on fire. • The photographers message: The photographer wants the viewer to be worried about the donkey and wonder whats burning in the background and why. • Why I chose this picture: For me this was a very touching photo because in the description of the photo it says when taking the photo Lucian felt bad for this donkey because he knew he would eventually die out here so he called his friend john walsh who is part of the world society for protecting animals who was also in Kuwait at the time and told him if he could come rescue the donkey, john came with his pick up truck and drove the donkey to Kuwait city where he was given to a family.
