Children’s Speaker Bureau CSB created to educate children about gardening – a children’s outreach program. • History • Summer 2011, Speaker’s Bureau divided into two components: • Adult Education • Children Education • August 2011, CSB concept introduced during the Monthly Master Gardener Meeting. • MGs interested in working with children volunteered • Organization was born • Sept – Dec, 2011, Twelve speaking engagements were conducted under the CSB

Children’s Speaker Bureau • Challenges: • Budget – New Organization / No Budget • Fall Rose Sale – raised $1075 • Purchased Junior Master Gardener Handbooks, supplies, and workshop materials • 2) Advertise CSB • Partnership with Clayton Yes! After School Program • West Handley Elementary After School Program • Morningside Elementary Garden Club

  4. Children’s Speaker Bureau • Challenges: (cont): • 3) December 2011 Program(s) • Clayton Yes! After School Program • Grass Heads • Seed Cards • Approximately 200 children introduced to gardening • 4 schools X 50 students per school • Visited each school twice

Children’s Speaker Bureau • Challenges: (cont): • 4) 2012 Program(s) • Needed something with more substance/structure • Researched JMG Materials • Timeframe – one school semester, twice a month • Decided to develop program on Vegetable Gardening • JMG “Growing a Vegetable Garden” has 13 activities • One of eight components needed to be JMG certified • Developed a calendar • 2 x Jan; 2 x Feb, 1 x Mar/Spring break; 2 x April; 1 x May • Developed a curriculum in 8 Lessons • Designed and Taught a Workshop to Master Gardener’s interested in working with children – Jan 6, 2012 (6 ½)

After School Partnership • Approximately 300 students educated /receive certificate • 6 schools x 50 children per school • West Handley Elementary • Approximately 30 children educated / receive certificate • Other Schools interested in the program • Morningside Elementary • Alice Carlson • Other Programs • Waterama • Garden Shows • City Festivals • School Fall Festivals/Carnivals • Etc

Children’s Speaker Bureau CSB Process Requests are sent to Marilyn Cox I add the request to the database Send emails to volunteers interested in working with children Volunteer teaches the lessons, completes the CSB Report Form, and sends it to Marilyn Cox The information is entered into the Master CSB Report Form Reports are submitted monthly to Steve Chaney
