ILC RDR Magnet Systems GroupTeleconference – October 18, 2007 Overview J. Tompkins
Agenda J. Tompkins - Overview
Topics for Meeting • Planning Meetings with Area Systems during GDE meeting in October • Damping Rings (A. Wolski)– Lead: M. Palmer • RTML (N. Solyak) – Lead: Vl. Kashihkhin • e+ Source (J. Clarke) – Lead: Vl. Kashikhin • Damping Rings KOM (after GDE meeting) • Mark will run through a draft of his magnet talk • BDS Kick-off Meeting (last week) • Cherrill, Tom, Paul, JCT will discuss “briefly” • Work Packages & EOI’s • ‘Around the table’ discussion of where things are (as far as we know...) J. Tompkins - Overview
Technical Areas • There are now formal “GDE EDR Work Package Proposal” forms : Work Package Template Note: they are due by Oct. 18th (today) J. Tompkins - Overview
ML Technology • (Yamamoto, Shidara, Kerby) • Groups: • Cavity Process(Lilje) • -CavityProd/Integ (Hayano) • Cryomodule(Ohuchi/Carter) • Cryogenics (Peterson) • HL-RF(Fukuda) • ML Integ. (Adolphsen) • Global Systems • (Ross, ) • Groups: • Civil • Controls • Convent. Facil. • Accelerator Systems • (Walker ) • Groups: • e- source • e+ source • Damp. Ring • BDS • RTML • Simulations • Project Man. Office • (Ross, ) • Groups: • System integration • Eng. Manage • - Cost and schedule • XFEL liaison Technical Areas • These new forms refer to “EDR Org Chart Level 2...” • Org chart from ML-Int (9/27) This doesn’t seem to use the same jargon as the Work Package instructions... Has anyone seen an official edr org chart?? J. Tompkins - Overview
A Belated ‘Thank You’ • Barry sent an email to the RDR Leaders on October 10th: “Dear RDR Leaders: This note is a belated thanks for a job very well done on the RDR. The final resultis an ILC concept documented in the RDR which has been both very well received on the outside, and one that will form a solid basis for the next engineering based phase of our work on the EDR....” • The complete text is here: Barry's 'Thank You‘ • An interesting programmatic comment is made in the last paragraph: “The Fermilab ALCPG07/GDE meeting represents the official end of the RDR phase and beginning of the EDR phase,. This new phase will continue for the next three years to our goal of releasing a draft EDR at the time of the July 2010 ICHEP meeting in Paris. At that point, we should be in very good position to propose funding for ILC construction.” J. Tompkins - Overview
Meetings with Area Systems • Damping Rings (A. Wolski)– Lead: M. Palmer • Wigglers – Cornell - M. Palmer • Ring dipoles, quads, & correctors – LBNL – M. Zisman, • RTML (N. Solyak) – Lead: Vl. Kashihkhin • SC quads for the low energy section modules – Vl. Kashikhin • Pulsed magnets – T. Mattison • Power systems – P. Bellomo • Challenging measurements – e.g., stray fields at high frequency (T ?) – J. DiMarco (?) • Alignment schemes – J. DiMarco • Work Packages for the above • e+ Source (J. Clarke) – Lead: Vl. Kashikhin • Magnets and Power Systems other than Undulators and Capture Magnet • Discuss what needs to be done and what resources are available • Assign priorities to various magnet engineering tasks • Critical magnets • Reliability/FMEA effort J. Tompkins - Overview
Meetings with Area Groups Note: meeting rooms have not yet been assigned. J. Tompkins - Overview
General Comments from BDS KOM • Revisit magnet design (I, Cu, V, R, L), cooling LCW, heat load to air, Power Systems, etc. • Losses in cables vs. magnet size, cost, etc. • Review stringing decision – how many independent PS are needed? • Iterate w/ lattice designers on independent powering/stringing decisions • Reduce number of PS • Reduce cable runs • Consider bulk current + shunt current approach to independent current settings (?) • Pulsed magnets • Details need attention • Prototyping is needed for a few cases • Radiation • Radiation hardness • Heat loads from energy deposition • (Energy deposition calculations are needed) • Parameters • Key parameters need to be identified • Definitions and version control procedures need to be established J. Tompkins - Overview
