Providing Remediation with Dwindling Resources Jennifer Grassi 5th Grade Teacher Doctoral Candidate Binghamton University
How Activity Time Developed • Many students struggling to master skills and little or no time to provide remediation • Grouped Math and Reading classes based on ability, but students still struggling • Researched programs
What is Activity Time? • 30 minute block of time at the end of each day for academic instruction • Struggling students, students missing assignments, or students who have been absent meet with a teacher for help
What About Non-Struggling Students? • Students report to practice groups – reinforce skills previously taught • Students are allowed to pursue other interests
Steps for Implementation • 1st – must decide what is important to you and the purpose of Activity Time • Remediation – primary focus • Recess - important • Enhance skills through practice • Develop interests for excelling students
Utilizing Every Resource • Must have support from administrator – created a presentation emphasize importance • Must have support from grade level colleagues • Must have support from other building colleagues
Cooperation of Colleagues • We will take ANYTHING you can give us • Band and Chorus moved to this time • AIS providers • Special Area teachers (Music, P.E., Library, Art) • Guidance Counselor • Special Education Consultant teacher and Teaching Assistant
How to Keep Things Running Smoothly • Whiteboard for morning sign-ups • Some students assigned already – make lists • Constant check-in with colleagues about changes that need to be made
Our Struggles • Large amount of time devoted to creation and organization of the program • Additional time needed when grading papers – categorize by skills • Needy students involved in band or chorus • Same students consistently given freedom to choose
Successes • Children are excited and consider this an earned freedom for 5th grade • Students are receiving the necessary remediation – improvement occurring • Support from co-workers
