  3. Similarities • Both use kanji ideograms • 70%-80% with same character meaning • Mistakes often made

  4. History and interactive influences • Chinese monosyllabic, japanese polysyllabic • After WWII both simplified language • 简体字 (jiǎntǐzì) “simplified Chinese characters” • 新字体 (shinjitai)“Simplified Japanese characters” • Katakana, hiragana, kanji

  5. Spoken language Chinese • Hanzi漢字 • Simplified easier to tell apart • Mandarin/Cantonese • 多音字 duoinzi “multiple reading characters”
