  2. What is it? • Human trafficking is modern day slavery. • It is the sale of human beings for the profit of others. • More than one person suffers from being brutally trafficked every minute around the world.

United Nations def. • "the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of threat, use of force or other means of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the receiving or giving of payment… to a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation."

  4. Human Trafficking • Over 27 Million people are trafficked today • A multi-billion dollar industry almost equal to the drug and illegal arms trade • Women and children are among the highest percentage trafficked

  5. Types of Trafficking • Un-voluntary Sex Slavery • Forced Labor • Debt Bondage • Child Soldiers

  6. Eastern Europe • Over 1 Million people have been trafficked from Eastern Europe • 100,000 Eastern European girls have been sold into the sex trade

  7. How it Happens? • Phony job offers abroad • Payments to orphanages for the 15 & 16 year old girls • Abductions • False advertising

  8. What Effects? • Documents are taken away • Beaten into submission • Forced to work or your life (or the lives of your loved ones at home) is threatened • Live in desperation

  11. What to do to prevent being trafficked? • Be careful meeting strangers who offer a better life and lots of money • Check out job offers through the hotline number and online resources • Always tell people where you are traveling to with contact numbers

  12. Signs of Trafficking • Cannot leave the shop or business • Does not have ID • Afraid around adults • Not allowed to be outside alone • Works long hours • Poor diet and appearance

  13. What to do if you are trafficked? • Try to find someone who will help you • Contact your embassy • Contact local authorities • Don’t lose hope

  14. How to help? • Spread the word about this issue • Help your friends who may be falsely offered a job abroad • Report suspicious people who advertise these types of offers • Lobby local government to prosecute traffickers
