Sequence. How do read a book? Do you start somewhere in the middle of the book and then flip back and forth between pages. Of course not. If you did this, the book would not make any sense. This is because stories and books are written in sequence.

  1. Sequence • How do read a book? Do you start somewhere in the middle of the book and then flip back and forth between pages. • Of course not. If you did this, the book would not make any sense. This is because stories and books are written in sequence. • Sequence is the order in which information is organized or given.

  2. Read the paragraph below and notice the underlined time-order words and phrases. Kavi and Jamar were on a camping trip with Jamar’s family. Jamar was telling Kavi how to set up the tent. “First we have to unroll the tent, and sort all the pieces. We have to spread the tent out, then we put the poles together. Next, we put the poles into the tent, one at a time. Then we each take an end the pole, and insert the end into that hole at the base of the tent. One we have done that with each pole, the tent will be up, and we we’ll just have to stake it.”

  3. This timeline diagram shows the order in which the events should occur. Unroll the tent and sort out pieces. Spread the tent out Put the poles together Put the poles into the tent Insert end of each pole into holes Stake the tent

  4. Read the story and answer the questions. Adam was training for the track meet for his middle school. He was to run in three races alone and in one relay. He practiced each day. The first thing he did was to stretch his muscles and make sure his muscles were ready to run. He stretched for ten minutes each morning. Then, he would run up and down the stadium steps three times before heading to the track. After running up the stadium steps, Adam would do twenty laps around the track. Finally, he would run all the way home and eat a large breakfast before showering. PLACE THE EVENTS IN THE CORRECT SEQUENCE BY USING THE NUMBERS 1-6: ___Adam ran up and down the stadium steps three times. ____He took a shower. ____Adam stretched his muscles for ten minutes. ____He ate a large breakfast. ____ Adam did twenty laps around the track. ____He ran all the way home
