IN-SITU SEWAGE TREATMENT(IST) In-situ Sewage Treatment refers to treatment of sewage in the running battery of flow without displacing; and by employing microbial consortia in aerobic and facultative environment to degrade sewage into CO2 and H2O and remove odour.
IST- TECHNOLOGIES Principle: Microbial consortia act on sewage to degrade into simpler forms under aerobic/anaerobic/ facultative environment-Extracellular Enzymes/Nutrients-added. Technologies: • Free release-Tablets/ Blocks/ Spraying • Blocks on Bottom- porous blocks embedded with microbes • Horizontal media/microbe loaded filters- Green Bridge • Self-Cleansing (Bio-Mimicry)

ROLE OF CPCB • Monitoring Performance at 4 locations • R & D components- Investigations • Evolving Guidelines/ Protocols. • Trainings and Mass Awareness
ROLE OF SPCBs • UP, Bihar and Punjab to constitute ‘Monitoring Committee’ represented by Municipality, Water Supply & Sewerage Board, Jal Nigam, State Urban Authority, Irrigation Department, NGOs, etc. • Guide Project Implementing Agency (PIA) at local level-including site visits • Coordinate with PIA and concerned agencies for required clearances, if any; • Undertake laboratory analyses for performance evaluation of technology(Random-basis).
R & D COMPONENTS(CPCB) • Standardization of the design parameters of In-situ sewage treatment technology in terms of working methodology, microbial dosing, and working optimum ranges of pH, temperature, time, hydraulics, etc. • Assessing efficacy and effectiveness of each treatment process with regard to removal of pollutants and elimination of pathogens. • Developing treatment packages with microbial dosing Vs MLD of sewage to be treated and taking care of microbial population control.
R & D COMPONENTS(CPCB) iv. Listing of microbes used in consortia to rule-out ‘secrets’ and having no doubts on harmful microbes. v. Study the formulation of intermediary compounds for assessing complete degradation. vi. Studying inhibitory/ antagonistic parameters effecting in-situ treatment. vii. Evolving Protocol and guidelines for implementation in other parts of the country.
MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT(DRAFT CONDITIONS) • Bank Guarantee against amount released. • Bank Guarantee for Performance claimed. • No charges for Royalty or Patent. • No GMOs. • No major alteration/modification of the drain. • Provisions for Third Party Inspection/ Monitoring. • Fortnightly Progress Reports (monthly/ quarterly basis).
RELEASE OF FUNDS • Release of funds in 4 equal installments (to PIAs). [However, felt need for 75 % fund at-once] • Bank Guarantees (against installments/ Performance) will be obtained from PIAs • Release of funds on receipt of UCs, Physical progress and Monitoring Reports
PRESENT STATUS • MoEF Accorded – Administrative Approval and Expenditure Sanction on 6th and 11th April, 2011 to 4 Projects. • CPCB has proposed for transfer of funds for further releasing to PIA subject to the receipt of two BGs and signing of MoA (total cost Rs. 19.84 Crore-first installment: 4.96 Crore).
LOCATION- 1 In-situ Treatment of Sewage through Bioremediation at BudhaNala, Ludhiana, Punjab
BUDHA NALA, LUDHIANA • Budha Nala originates at Kumbkalam and runs parallel to River Sutlej and joins at Gorsian Kadar Baksh. • Perennial freshwater source and gets polluted in Ludhiana. • water used for irrigation near Ferozpur. • Carries treated/untreated industrial wastewater of Ludhiana city.
PHYSICAL FEATURES • Length : 36 km. (Kumbkalan to Ludiana 13 km & Ludhiana to Sutlej River confluence point 23 km) • Width of the Drain : 12-24 meter • Average water depth : 0.6-1.8 meter • Average Flow : 600 MLD (Monitored by CPCB)
PROJECT OBJECTIVES • Demonstration of ‘In-situ Sewage Treatment’ in Budha Nala • Treatment of wastewater by application of microbial consortia augmented with aquatic plants • Standardization of the technology for replication after assessment of performance
TECHNOLOGY : GREEN-BRIDGE • Green-bridge and three to four hydro-cell construction for flow control and effective treatment of sewage. • Green –Bridge acts as a reservoir of microbes • Microbial storage at the green bridges and mingling by bottom of the hydro-cells. • Microbes feed on the pollutants and treat the water • Aquatic plants grown on Green-bridges & along drain-bank absorb nutrients to treat waste water.
WORKING PRINCIPLE • Placement of Bar screen before green bridge to trap garbage and other floating materials • Waste water to pass through green bridges placed in a Zig-zag manner. • The green bridges made of boulder provided with microbial doses and aquatic plants grown over it. • Microbial doses released from the Green Bridge and also from bottom of hydro-cells • Regular monitoring of water quality • Regular cleaning of Green bridges and maintenance of aquatic plants.
DEMONSTRATED CASE STUDIES • Ahar River for Eco-restoration, Pune • Udaisagar lake for Eco-restoration - Udaipur
COST OF THE PROJECT Rs. 15.28 Crore (including one year O&M cost)
LOCATION-2 MorigateNala, Allahabad
MORIGATE NALA, ALLAHABAD • MorigateNala carries 40 MLD sewage from Allahabad city to River Ganga • Two drains coming from Katra and Rambagh, meets at Parade Ground and outfalls into River Ganga through Morigate • As per High Court Order, the Nala has been blocked, but spill over still reaching River Ganga.
TECHNOLOGY: BIO-AUGMENTATION • ‘EmTech’ patented product used in tablet and liquid form to release microbial consortia • Degrade organic matters, oil & grease, reduces sludge and remove odour
WORKING PRINCIPLE • Physical cleaning at dosing points to maintain flow • Bar screen to be installed before dosing points • Sprayer and slow release tablets to be applied at upstream of drain • Installation of spraying devices for microbial dosing at selected sites of microbes at selected sites • Operation of Fixed mist sprayer for consistent mix of microbes with wastewater
COST OF THE PROJECT Rs. 1.38 Crore (including one year O&M cost)
LOCATION-3 BakarganjNala,Patna
BAKARGANJ NALA, PATNA • Length : 2.5 km • Width : 2 – 5 meters • Depth : 2-3 ft. • Flow : 21 MLD • Joins River Ganga
TECHNOLOGY: ECO-BIO-BLOCK • EBB contains “fermented soya bean bacillus” • Made of porous volcanic rock, cement, beneficial bacteria and nutrients that released regularly in water • EBB structure designed according to hydrodynamics and placed • Number of EBB requested is based on pollution load
Interlocking of Eco-Bio Blocks DIFFERENT STRUCTURES OF EBB BLOCKS
WORKING PRINCIPLE • Pre-analysis of water quality for Block Placement • Installation of Bar screen to check floating materials • Installation of EBB reactor and bottom lining • De-silting of the drain at regular intervals • EBB bacteria degrade organic matters into carbon dioxide and water and helps in rapid oxidization (anaerobically) converting ammonia into nitrite and nitrate, nitrates are naturally absorbed by plants and microbes and release nitrogen gas • EBB bacteria in contact of water, propagate and multiply every half an hour to cleanse water
