Children’s International School (Secondary) Student Blog Information 2012-13
This is a community of individuals with at least one thing in common: BIG School is a part of your lives.
Ok, fine. But what does that have to do with a “Student Blog club?”
I believe… • Technology is everywhere, • Stories are everywhere, and • Our community needs (and wants!) to hear them. • Most of all, I believe… YOU have something to say.
What is a “Blog”? • “… A blog (a portmanteau of the term web log) is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). .”- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog • You will often find multimedia components on Blogs

About CIS Inc. • The Children’s International School (Secondary) Newspaper/Blog Club, which is commonly called “CISS Inc.”, is a student directed blog. • We will meet once a week on Tuesday during break. Club meetings will be held in the ICT room S11. • The club begins in September and will continue through June. • Our published blog will sell advertising space for various amounts of money. It can be viewed on our school website for everyone to enjoy. • The club is open to all secondary school students. Students that are engaged in external exams may leave the club during the exam season and return once they are able. • All students may submit articles for review and publication. The club coordinators are Mrs. Anozia (Mathematics) and Mr. Nwankwo (ICT).
Our goals 1) Reach out to our campus through social networks It costs no money and little time to share stories on sites where students spend a lot of time, like Twitter and Facebook. Once they're out there, readers can generate buzz around the stories, and they'll soon start to send in tips. 2) Kick your reporters and editors out of the newsroom While the newsroom is a good place to write and edit stories, it's a poor place for reporting. Encourage face-to-face interviews. Get out and talk to our readers and find out what matters to them. 3) Teach new skills - Hold workshops on search engine optimization, video editing, HTML/CSS, audio gathering and other new media skills. - Hold training sessions for the students and teachers on photography and blogging skills. This will connect readers to the blog and enhance the quality of our user-generated content. 4) Get involved in the community- Follow up the ‘CIS Legacy’ project. - Participate as a team in school fundraisers and other initiatives such as VOLT club. It's another way to help a good cause, and it's fun. 5) Create an internal newsroom wiki Use it to share ideas, best practices and resources for individual development. 6) Add links to your storiesThis is an easy way to direct your readers to more information and give your copy more credibility at the same time. 7) Write effective Web headlines Make information related to your community king in search engines by brushing up on search engine optimization (SEO). Write Web headlines that use keywords that are likely to come up in Web searches.
Bottom line: whether you’re a… • Writer • Photographer • Videographer • Producer • Editor • Blogger • Artist We need YOU!
Afraid you don’t have “teh skillz?” • Don’t worry! • We’ll help each other! • And, hopefully,we’ll also havesome outside help.
