Bayou Blues Case Study Colleen Good Jennifer Wilcox
Identified Problems • School performance • Stagnant for two years • 10th grade- • 60% is at or below minimal performance in reading and language arts • 70% is at or below minimal performance in math
Suspensions and Dropouts • Latinos and African American students have a higher percentage in both areas • 72% of disadvantaged students dropped out in 2005-06
Morale • Student and teacher morale is low • Teachers seem to have poor motivation and little trust in working with each other • In group/out group • Students have a lack of respect for each other and teachers • Race plays a role in the community which overflows into the schools for staff and students
Methodology • Quantitative • Demographics • Performance scores • Suspension • Dropout • Office referral • Racial Justice Report Card
Qualitative • Informal interviews • Observation • “Hear say”
Alternative Methodology • Increase the qualitative data collection to determine the root of problems through surveys and interviews. • Perception surveys for students and staff • Use this data to evaluate how people feel they are viewed • Interview staff members of the in group/out group to get opinions on what they perceive as the core problems of the building
What we would do…. • Conduct surveys and interviews • Disband BLT • Create working groups to evaluate surveys/interviews and create goals • Involve students to build morale-student groups • Get administration on the same page • Begin tutoring programs • Pursue available grant monies
