Musical Timbre (Tam-ber) • Tone color or timbre – the unique sound that is associated with any given solo or combination of instruments. • Instrument – a mechanism that generates musical vibrations and launches them into the air. • Register – The range of an instrument, such as high or low. • The Voice – • Soprano – Sopra literally “over.” The high female voice. • Mezzo-soprano • Alto – A lower female voice. • Tenor – A high male voice • Pavarotti, a legend (see bio on page 40). • Baritone – “normal” • Bass – A low male voice • Vibrato -- throbbing effect
