  1. Act 2 sc 2 Objectives To comment on the way O’Neill portrays the characters’ negative characteristics, yet has the audience to an extent feeling sympathetic towards them.

  2. Look at the opening stage directions: How has each character reacted to Mary’s return to morphine addiction? O’Neill portrays the characters in the play as highly flawed, yet he makes the audience feel a degree of sympathy for each of them. Pairs work on an individual character to produce a positive/ negative table for them. These can then be fed into a shared document.

  3. Re-read Act 2 sc 2
