FLaRE Update • The FLaRE fiscal agent will be Panhandle Area Educational Consortia (PAEC) instead of University of Central Florida (UCF) • There will be approximately FLaRE Coordinators • FLaRE Coordinators will report to the 5 Regional Executive Directors (REDs) • Just Read, Florida! will provide professional development to the Coordinators and work closely with the REDs.

Budget • 4.6 Million from Legislature • 4.2 Million Residual from Reading First • Reading Allocation: $101,923,720 • JRF will fund: • Online Courses for Reading Endorsement through NEFEC and FOR-PD at UCF • Families Building Better Readers, Mysteries in the Middle and High School Quiz Show at PAEC • LEaRN and Florida Reading Initiative at NEFEC • FLaRE at PAEC

  6. Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading • K-2 Assessments: • Teacher administered through web-based • entry (electronic scoring tool) or paper/pencil completion • and PMRN entry • Testing has gone very smoothly with the electronic • scoring tool at pilot sites • 1300 mini-laptops will be provided to elementary schools • based on a prioritization schedule • 3-12 Assessments: • Students will complete assessments online with automatic • data entry • Testing has gone smoothly; working with some sites on • bandwidth issues

  7. Reading Endorsement Plans • All Submitted Reading Endorsement Continuance Letters approved through June 30, 2014 • Continue to e-mail any Additions to the Plan for Approval

Reading Endorsement Competencies through Approved Pre-service Programs • SBE Rule passed in 2006 • Elementary Ed, ESE and Pre K-Primary will graduate with competencies 1-5 (Competency 6 optional) • All other teacher preparation programs (middle grades, secondary and K-12 special areas) will graduate with competencies 1-2

Reading Endorsement Competencies through Approved Pre-service Programs • Institutions were to submit their plans by August 1, 2008 to DOE Program Approval • Just Read, Florida! reviews all folios • Many institutions still in the approval process - addressing JRF requested revisions • After July 1, 2010, assumptions can be made; prior to this date, district must seek verification from the institution

  10. Summer Professional Development • June 8th through August 13 • 24 Venues around the State • Multiple Strands • Over 7,000 Educators Registered • Registration Process • Caveats

  11. K-12 Comprehensive Reading Plan • FEFP Reading Allocation available in District K-12 Reading Plan Budget Sections • Budget sections due June 5 • Second Round Reviews and Feedback provided by June 1 • Further revisions due ASAP

CATER Update Career and Technical Education Reading (CATER) pilot project Very successful pilot providing reading intervention through Career and Technical Education classes in Citrus, Polk, Volusia Level 1 and 2 fluent students Several weeks of training with JRF staff, ongoing site visits and support
