  13. What Does Praying In Faith Mean? • 1Jn 5:14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. • 1Jn 5:15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

  14. What Does Praying In Faith Mean? • To pray in faith means • We abide in or live by His Word • We trust in His promises revealed in His Word • Notice apostles had been given ability to reveal and confirm Scriptures by miracles, abilities we do not have today • Note some examples of those who prayed in faith, trusted God to carry out His Word

  15. Solomon Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 8:22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven. • 1Ki 8:23 He said, "O LORD, the God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing lovingkindness to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart,

  16. Solomon Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 8:24 who have kept with Your servant, my father David, that which You have promised him; indeed, You have spoken with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand as it is this day.

  17. Solomon Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 8:25 "Now therefore, O LORD, the God of Israel, keep with Your servant David my father that which You have promised him, saying, 'You shall not lack a man to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way to walk before Me as you have walked.'

  18. Solomon Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 8:26 "Now therefore, O God of Israel, let Your word, I pray, be confirmed which You have spoken to Your servant, my father David. • 1Ki 8:27 "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!

  19. Solomon Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 8:28 "Yet have regard to the prayer of Your servant and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which Your servant prays before You today; • 1Ki 8:29 that Your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, toward the place of which You have said, 'My name shall be there,' to listen to the prayer which Your servant shall pray toward this place.

  20. Solomon Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 8:30 "Listen to the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place; hear in heaven Your dwelling place; hear and forgive.

  21. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years. • Dan 9:3 So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes.

  22. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:4 I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed and said, "Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, • Dan 9:5 we have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly and rebelled, even turning aside from Your commandments and ordinances.

  23. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:6 "Moreover, we have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers and all the people of the land.

  24. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:7 "Righteousness belongs to You, O Lord, but to us open shame, as it is this day--to the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those who are nearby and those who are far away in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds which they have committed against You.

  25. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:8 "Open shame belongs to us, O Lord, to our kings, our princes and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. • Dan 9:9 "To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against Him;

  26. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:10 nor have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His teachings which He set before us through His servants the prophets. • Dan 9:13 "As it is written in the law of Moses, all this calamity has come on us; yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our iniquity and giving attention to Your truth.

  27. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:18 "O my God, incline Your ear and hear! Open Your eyes and see our desolations and the city which is called by Your name; for we are not presenting our supplications before You on account of any merits of our own, but on account of Your great compassion.

  28. Daniel Prayed In Faith • Dan 9:19 "O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name."

  29. Elijah Prayed In Faith • Jas 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. • Jas 5:17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. • Jas 5:18 Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.

  30. Elijah Prayed In Faith • Deu 11:16 "Beware that your hearts are not deceived, and that you do not turn away and serve other gods and worship them. • Deu 11:17 "Or the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and He will shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its fruit; and you will perish quickly from the good land which the LORD is giving you.

  31. Elijah Prayed In Faith • Deu 11:18 "You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.

  32. Elijah Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."

  33. Elijah Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 18:1 Now it happened after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the face of the earth."

  34. Elijah Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 18:41 Now Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of the roar of a heavy shower." • 1Ki 18:42 So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he crouched down on the earth and put his face between his knees.

  35. Elijah Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 18:43 He said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." So he went up and looked and said, "There is nothing." And he said, "Go back" seven times. • 1Ki 18:44 It came about at the seventh time, that he said, "Behold, a cloud as small as a man's hand is coming up from the sea." And he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot and go down, so that the heavy shower does not stop you.'"

  36. Elijah Prayed In Faith • 1Ki 18:45 In a little while the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy shower. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.

  37. What Is Faith And How Do We Acquire It?? • Faith is not a blind leap of belief which is not based on reliable, reasonable evidence • Faith is a confident, trusting belief in God resulting in obedience to Him • It is based on reasonable evidence God provides by His word resulting in obedience to Him

  38. What Is Faith And How Do We Acquire It?? • Faith originates with God Himself who provides reasonable evidence for believing in Him by Creation and in His Word • Not only evidence of why we should believe in God but how we should express our faith (trust) by obeying Him in whatever way He reveals in His Word

  39. Description of Faith • Heb 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. • Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

  40. Saving Faith Results In Obeying God • Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. • Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

  41. Saving Faith Results In Obeying God • Jas 2:20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? • Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? • Jas 2:22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;

  42. Saving Faith Results In Obeying God • Jas 2:23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS," and he was called the friend of God. • Jas 2:24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

  43. Faith Given By God Who Provides Us With Evidence For Belief • Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; • Eph 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. • Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

  44. Faith Given By God Who Provides Us With Evidence For Belief • Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. • Rom 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH." • Rom 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

  45. Faith Given By God Who Provides Us With Evidence For Belief • Joh 20:30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; • Joh 20:31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

  46. Prayer Is An Act Of Faith Showing Trust In God’s Word • Must seek to live in harmony with God’s Word, learning and applying what He has revealed to us • Must pray in harmony with His Word not asking for anything that would violate His revealed will

  47. Must Seek To Live In Harmony With God’s Word • Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." • Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"

  48. Must Seek To Live In Harmony With God’s Word • Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. • Act 2:41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.

  49. Must Seek To Live In Harmony With God’s Word • Act 2:42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

  50. Must Seek To Live In Harmony With God’s Word • Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. • Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
