Kids Fears • The Top Fears: • Scary movies and TV shows • Nightmares and scary dreams • Thunderstorms, hurricanes, and other violent weather • War and terrorism • Sounds heard at night. • Children are not all afraid of the same things. And what makes one person scared can be no big deal for someone else.

  3. What’s fear Anyway? • Fear is a feeling that everyone has – programmed into all of us – and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us. We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. • The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it.

  4. CPS Curriculum • Here’s what we’re already talking about during classroom Counselor time: • - Abuse Prevention • Summer Safety • Internet Safety • Safety Strategies for a variety of situations. • We teach K-5 the following concepts: • Belly Button Radar • Trusted adults Kids can talk with. • Rule of 3 – taught in all grades – “Say NO, Get Away, Tell a Trusted Adult”

Tips for Talking with your children • Turn off the News – • Listen to your Children • Make age appropriate decisions when sharing information with your child. • Help Children feel secure and safe. • What does a stranger look like? (Tricky people) -Grownups who ask people for help-NO grownup needs to be asking our children for help -Grownups who tell children to keep a secret from their parents -Teach your kids not do anything or go anywhere with any adult unless they can ask your permission first • Model confidence and Assurance • Find a positive way to make a difference.

  7. Keepa regular schedule • Seek out side help if necessary • Don’t assume you know how your child is feeling • Don’t label feelings as wrong

  8. “Tricky People” • Grownups who ask people for help-NO grownup needs to be asking our children for help • Grownups who tell children to keep a secret from their parents • Teach your kids not do anything or go anywhere with any adult unless they can ask your permission first • “Strangers” may not look like the stereotype of a bad person • Strangers may not be bad-Ex. Police officer, Mom standing with her kids, school personnel
