  1. Sponges

  2. Sponges • Kingdom • Animalia • Phylum • Porifera

  3. Sponges • Sessile • Don’t move • No specialized tissues or organs • Asymmetrical

  4. Sponges • Body Structure • Vase-wall around a hollow tube • Closed at the bottom and open at the top • Water comes through pores on the side • Porocytes • Water carries nutrients and wastes • Water leaves through the open top • Osculum

  5. What’s it made of? • Spongin- flexible protein • Spicules- spikes/needles of calcium carbonate Provide support Spongin Spicules

  6. Hey, nice choanocyte you got there!

  7. Digestion • Filter feeder (heterotroph)- bring in small food particles from water through porocytes (pores) & travels through spongocoel (central cavity) • Then the choanocytes (collar cells)trap & digest food; • Next, amoebocytes carry nutrients to cells & take away waste; • Finally, the remaining water leaves through the osculum (opening at top of sponge)

  8. A closer look: • Choanocytes • Collar traps food in mucous • Flagella keeps water moving through atrium

  9. A closer look: • Amoebocytes • Carry nutrients to cells and then carry away waste • Based on simple diffusion!

  10. Sponges • Reproduction • Asexual • Budding • Regeneration • Sexual • Sperm released by some cells and go into pores of another sponge to meet up with egg cells • New zygote develops flagella and swims away • Grows on new surface
