  2. A Simple Sentence A Simple Sentence has ONE independent clause.

  3. An independent clause: A group of words that • Makes a complete statement • Has a subject • Has a verb

  4. The subject of a sentence The subject is the • Person • Place • Thing • Quality • Idea That the sentence is about. Nouns

  5. Examples: • John went for a walk. (Person) • Towns are quiet after snowfalls. (Place) • Eggs rolled off the counter. (Things) • Silence is golden. (Quality) • Peace is at hand. (Idea)

  6. A Verb The verb of a sentence is a word that shows the action or state of being of the subject of the sentence. Examples: Sally sneezed. (Physical action) John thinks. (Mental action) Jesse is my friend. (State of being)

  7. Verb-Subject Identification Procedure • Step 1: Look for the action or state-of-being word to find the verb. • Step 2: Ask yourself “Who or what (verb)?” to find the subject. Example: Kevin reported the theft. The action (verb) is reported. Who reported? Kevin. Kevin is the subject.

  8. Simple Sentence Formulas: S (Subject) V (verb) SV SS V S VV SS VV Yes, a simple sentence can be long and have two subjects and two verbs!

  10. SSV Example The oranges and apples on the trees looked delicious. S S V
