  3. Description • Openings or splits in the upper lip, the palate or both • Two types: • Clefts of primary palate • Clefts of secondary palate • Further described by: • Complete/incomplete • Unilateral/bilateral

  6. Diagnosing Cleft Lip/Palate • Most cases are immediately apparent at birth. • Prenatal: • Ultrasound • Sample of amniotic fluid • Submucous Cleft: • Triad of symptoms

  9. SLP Diagnosis • SLP can diagnose all of the speech features that are associated with a cleft palate • Articulation • Resonance • Nasal Air Emission • Voice • Physician officially diagnoses and classifies the type of cleft
