Diabetes (Type 2) In children &Adolescents • Increased dramatically in a short period • Before 1992 = 2 to 4% of all childhood DM • 1994 = increased to 16 % • The parallel increase of obesity is the most significant factor for the rise in diabetes. • Insulin resistance Obese children and adolescents are 12.6 times more likely than non-obese to have high fasting blood insulin levels, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
