What are Free School? • There are 507 open free schools, with another 284 in the process of opening. • 83% of approved free schools are located in areas of recognised need. • Free schools are more likely to be rated Outstanding by Ofsted than other types of school. 30% of free schools are judged Outstanding by Ofsted compared with 21% of other school types. • Free schools are helping disadvantaged pupils access a high-quality education, being nearly three times more likely to be located in the most deprived areas of the country than the least deprived areas. • Free schools are more likely to be oversubscribed than any other type of state school.
SGS Academy Trust • Established by South Gloucestershire & Stroud College in 2016 • £40m income; 900+ staff; 15,000 students • Three schools: • Forest High School, Cinderford • SGS Berkeley Green University Technical College, Berkeley (Digital Tech & Eng) • SGS Pegasus, Patchway (Specialist School – Autistic Spectrum Condition)
Experience in opening new schools • SGS Berkeley Green UTC: 600 – place 14-18 free school. £14m • SGS Pegasus: 85 - place 4-18 free school: £9m
Our proposal • Establish two 6-form entry 11-16 (max 900 students) schools in: • the quedgeley / Hardwicke / Kingsway area – sgs Kingsway school • Lyde Green, South Gloucestershire – sgsparkfield school • The school will benefit from four distinct approaches • The curriculum will be enhanced to focus on digital and engineering technologies, in partnership with SGS Berkeley Green UTC • The school will be built and operated in a way it can support children with ASC, inpartnership with SGS Pegasus School • The curriculum will be applied to work experience and project work with a range of employers currently partnering SGS College and SGS BG UTC • Career education throughout the time at the school to ensure 100% Transition to work (apprenticeships), sixth form or college at year 11,in partnership with SGS Careers Service • Opening Sept 2022
Why is a new school needed? The numbers… • SGSAT has worked closely with Council Officers in South Gloucestershire & Gloucestershire – the demand for secondary school places is increasing year on year in each area and a new secondary school is required • By 2022, all schools in these area will be at capacity • From 2023 there will be a shortfall of school places in the area(s)
