    1. O’Neill Sea Odyssey 2009-2013 Five Year Strategic Plan Approved 3-16-09

    2. Mission O’Neill Sea Odyssey’s mission is to provide a hands-on educational experience to encourage the protection and preservation of our living sea and communities.

    3. Quick Facts O’Neill Sea Odyssey (OSO) provides a one-day field trip on the Team O’Neill catamaran and a shore-side education center. Community service project is required to participate. Classes & youth groups apply for participation at www.oneillseaodyssey.org. 4th – 6th grade Curriculum is provided for classroom teachers.

History & Accomplishments OSO was founded in 1996 and incorporated in 1997; As of March 2009, 50,000 youth have been served in 1,700 classes & groups; 1,700 community service projects completed; Multi-day leadership programs for low-income youth, including the weeklong San Jose Community Oceanography Program; OSO serves special needs youth via Adam Webster Memorial Fund; OSO building donated by Jack O’Neill & Harry Hind in 2000 then renovated in 2004; Curriculum aligned with Federal education standards and ocean literacy principles; December 2004: California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award in Children’s Environmental Education; May 2005: Senator Boxer’s Environmental Champion award.

KEY GOALS FOR 2009-2013 Become a green organization: reduce carbon, water & waste footprint; Export educational content nationally & internationally; Video program for inland & coastal US schools; Continue core program – capacity 200 classes per year; Collaborate w/others for innovative programs; Meet demands for outcome measurement & evaluations; Advocate for funding for & acceptance of outdoor and ocean education.

    6. Staffing for Organizational Needs Potential US video & international curriculum will increase need for staff; Expanding the program will increase need for staff; OSO needs to ensure that staff costs are funded and that administrative costs are kept to a minimum.

    8. Community Outreach & Advocacy Goal: educate decision-makers about value of our work.

    9. Build Endowment & Secure Building Future Goal: to secure long-term assets to support our work. Set corpus goal for OSO’s endowment fund; Encourage & assist with planned giving options for donors; Pay off principal of building loan & work to sustain tenant base.

    10. Innovate & Demonstrate Program Goal: to leverage resources to enhance & demonstrate program impact. Promote curriculum & activities on website to schools & youth; Collaborate to build special programs, such as Ocean Scholars program with the Familia Center; Finish & promote long-term impact study; Continue to measure and evaluate program outcomes; Be available to provide expertise for ocean-going commercial tours to promote ocean conservation; Maintain core, one-day program as the standard, per demand.

    11. Export Program Goal: to increase number of youth served, protect ocean & broaden impact. Export curriculum content nationally & internationally; Video program for coastal and inland US schools ; OSO would be the model for any national or international program

Maintain Organizational Quality Goal: continue high quality of organization and therefore maintain & enhance our valued resource & service delivery “Green” organization: reduce carbon, waste & water footprint – boat & education center; Stay apprised of legal developments as they affect non-profits; Offer expanded training for staff; Collaborate with others to innovate program.

    13. Promote Program Goal: to increase our visibility & accessibility. Website: donor recognition, curriculum, interactive class database, weather system & videos; Newsletter: promote ocean knowledge as well as donor recognition; New promotional video: stress program impact; Media coverage & keep up with new technology to communicate our message.

    14. Sustain Program Goal: to diversify & strengthen our fund base and therefore our service delivery. Double individual donor base; Board and Advisory Board identify fund sources; Annual events for supporters; Institutional - foundation, government funding; Endowment & planned giving for the future; Investigate potential donations from related products; Target new areas for funding.
