  4. How do I Find Psychology Books in the Library? • Use the PAC (Online Catalog) • Search by Author, Title, or Subject • Get the Call Number • Get the Location • Use Circuit/Link+ for books not owned by SDSU

  5. How do I find Psychology Journal Articles at SDSU? • Search PsycINFO for a specific topic • Links within PsycINFO will lead you to full text (either in print or electronic format). Look for the “Find Full Text” button

  6. What if SDSU does not own the material I need? • For books: Circuit and Link+ • For journal articles and dissertations: Interlibrary Loan • How long will it take? • Books: 1-5 days • Articles: 1-2 weeks

Databases in Psychology • PsycInfo (abstracts of journal articles, book chapters, symposia, dissertations, etc.) • Medline (abstracts of journal articles) • Academic Search Elite, ProQuest Research Library ( abstracts and full text of magazines and journals) Search from Home?   8. Pros and Cons of Searching Computer Databases • Pros: Search can be fast, efficient, and remote • Cons: • Information Overload • Lack of Terminology Standardization • Solutions?

  9. Solution to Information Overload: Boolean Logic • Necessary to narrow down searches • And, Or, Not • AND: Narrows search • OR: Broadens search • Example: Blue eyes AND Brown hair

  10. Solution to Lack of Language Standardization • Problem: Information Seeker and Database Indexer often use different terminology • Solutions: • Use Synonyms • Use Special Thesaurus or Database Index

  11. Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms • Includes definition of terms and suggestions of terms to use • Manic depression, manic depressive psychosis, bipolar mood disorder, bipolar affective disorder = Bipolar disorder • Bonding = Attachment behavior
