  1. Photosynthesis

  2. What are some ways animals use energy? • To eat • To move • Cells use them for basic functions of life

  3. Where do animals get their energy? • From food and their environment

  4. Where are house plants usually placed? What happens if the houseplant doesn’t get enough light? What does this tell you about why plants need light? • By a window • It wilts or dies • Plants need light to survive

  5. Define Photosynthesis • The process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make food

  6. What is the key idea about how living things get sunlight? • Nearly all living things obtain energy either directly or indirectly from the energy of sunlight that is captured during photosynhtesis.

  7. What happens during photosynthesis? • During photosynthesis plants and some other organisms absorb energy from the sun in the chloroplast by using chlorophyll. It converts carbon dioxide and water into sugars and oxygen.

  8. Write out the Photosynthesis equation and draw a simple model showing how photosynthesis occurs. • Light energy + 6CO2 (carbon dioxide) + 6H2O (water) C6H12O2 (glucose)+6O2 (oxygen)

  9. What is the name of the organelle in which photosynthesis takes place? • Chloroplast

  10. Why is it green? • It is green because of the pigment chlorphyll

  11. How many atoms of oxygen are on the left side of the equation? Carbon? Hydrogen? And the right side • Light energy + 6CO2+ 6H2OC6H12O6+ 6O2 Left side RightSide Oxygen = 18 Oxygen = 18 Carbon = 6 Carbon = 6 Hydrogen = 12 Hydrogen = 12

  12. Has matter been conserved? • Yes because the same amount of atoms are on each side just in a different combination.

  13. Why do living things need energy? • For cells to function(growing and making foods)

  14. Give an example of how energy from the sun gets into your cells. • A carrots chlorophyll captures the suns energy. A rabbit eats the carrot. I eat the rabbit in a stew. I have now obtained energy from the sun. • YOU CAN NOT USE MY EXAMPLE! COME UP WITH YOUR OWN! • Your BOOK is due Wed. Nov. 14th.
