Assessing and Developing ArgumentReviewing Argument Elements Lesson Objectives To evaluate student’s current knowledge of argument element definitions To review this knowledge and use Assessment for Learning techniques to improve and consolidate it. To work together and foster positive working relationships
Homework Review/ Starter Your homework was: Learn the definitions of the argument elements covered so far. Lesson starter: • Get ready for the test!
Test • You have seven minutes to complete the argument elements definitions test. • Each definition has 1, 2 or 3 marks available.
Mark your own Test • Now the test is finished you are to mark your own test to see how many marks out of 20 you think you have achieved. • You have 2 minutes
Mark another student’s test and review their answers. • Swap your test with another student. • Now mark the other student’s test paper and give them a mark out of 20. (3 mins) • Identify 1, 2 or 3 questions where you could improve their answers and write your improvements on their sheets. (2 mins) • Identify 1, 2 or 3 questions where their answers are better than yours – write this on their sheets as well done stars! (2 mins)
Improving your own answers • Swap your tests back so that you have your original test. • Improve you answers based on the other test you have just seen. (3 mins) • Now remark your test. (2 mins) • How many marks did you improve by?
Class discussion • Now we are going to go through the actual answers to the test to identify any common problems/ misunderstandings. • How many marks did you actually get initially? After the review? • Write down 3 things that you need to do for homework to consolidate your understanding of the argument elements.
Applying Argument elements to a current example • Watch and listen to the video clip of David Cameron being interviewed about Child Benefit Reform at: • http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11473609 • Talk through in pairs, groups and as a class the argument elements used in Mr Cameron’s interview. • Evaluate the strength of the argument.
Homework • Complete your consolidation exercise which you identified after the test review. • Write out his argument in standard argument format (R1, Ex, MC etc). • Evaluate the strength of his argument.
