  2. Schema Theory Our schema are set up like file folders in a file cabinet. Schema are organized ‘compartments’ where we store organized pieces of information. As we learn new information, we try to place it in a ‘folder’ to which it is best suited. If we put it in the wrong place, we’ll have trouble retrieving it when we need it.

  3. Piaget’s Notion of EQUILIBRATION When we see or experience something that doesn’t make sense to us, we try to figure it out. We try to achieve a balance between our understanding of the world and the experiences we have. This is called equilibration - we seek equilibrium or balance.

  4. Cognitive Development As we learn new things, we often run into situations where we are adding new information to existing schemas. EQUILIBRATION Often, we simply take new information into our existing schemas quite easily because it fits just fine. But, sometimes our schema needs to change and expand in order to make the new information fit.

  5. Association When we encounter new information, we look for ways to connect, or associate, it with what we already know.

  6. Assimilation When information is added to our schema easily, we all this We simply assimilate the new information into our existing schema. Assimilation

  7. Assimilation

  9. Cognitive Dissonance Schema For BIRD

  10. Accomodation When we have to modify our existing schema in order to take in new information, and maintain our equilibrium, we call this We have to accommodate the new learning. This is harder than assimilation, but it is critical if we are to challenge ourselves to see things new ways. Accomodation

  11. Piaget’s Schema Theory - Review Schema- clusters of organized information in our brains—that which is clustered (via synaptic paths) Equilibration - creating a balance between the way we know our world and the new experiences we have Association – making a connection with prior knowledge Assimilation - adding new information to our existing schema Accommodation - revising our existing schema to accept new information

  12. Cognitive Development Let’s PRACTICE!!! OH BOY!

  13. Cognitive Development As a small group, create a group schema for 1 of the following words. Brainstorm and write down EVERY WORD that is suggested without discussion. HOME SICK FLAG TIRE RIVER EARTH PICTURE PLAY

  14. Cognitive Development Now, examine each ‘schema’ one at a time. For each schema; • circle the most common words that everyone understood (ASSIMILATION) • put a square around any words that needed some explanation for one or more group members (ACCOMODATION)
