  5. What This Course is About • Course is about learning how to manage operations more effectively. • One of the main reasons why some companies are more successful than others is that they do a better job of managing their operations. • How do you manage operations more effectively?

  6. What This Course is About • You must first learn how to recognize an operational problem. • You must then have the tools (models) to solve the problem. • Lastly, you must be able to interpret and report results to management. • Purpose of this course is to provide you with these skills.

Class Notes • Notes differ from textbook. • Some topics in text are presented in more detail in the notes. • Some topics in text are not covered in notes. • Some topics in notes are not covered in text. • Read both the text and the notes, except sections in textbook that are omitted in “List of Assignments.”

  10. Email • I will use a class email list to email you from time to time regarding assignments, tests, and more. • To receive emails from me, you must activate you campus email account. • If you haven’t, you can by logging onto the portal at: https://www.csun.edu/portal

  11. Email • If you prefer to receive campus email to a non-campus email account such as Yahoo or Hotmail, you may configure mail-forwarding to that account via the account maintenance web site: • https://www.csun.edu/account

Excel Add-Ins • We will use two Excel add-ins: • “Solver” and • “Data Analysis” • To install, click on Tools/Add-ins • In the dialog box that appears, check: • “Analysis ToolPak” • Don’t check Analysis ToolPak-VBA • “Solver Add-in” • Depending on your version of Excel, you may need the installation disk to install the add-ins.

  13. Team Assignments • Teams will be randomly called on in class to answer questions on material in • class notes and • homework assignments. • “Term Report to Management” due on day of final exam. • More later.

  14. Teams • 5 members per team • Make up a team name and give me an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet paper with • Names of team members and • Team name • Due on September 11th.

  15. Team Report to Management • Report will deal with a case involving OM problems. • Your job is to • identify the problems, • Analyze the problems, and • explain the results of your analysis and offer recommendations to management.

Team Report to Management • Case will be posted on web site by on October 1st. • Report is limited to three, double spaced typewritten pages using 12 point font. • Pages not meeting these requirements will not be read. • You may add appendices • Tables graphs, etc. • Not part of page restriction

  17. Team Report to Management • Report must put in a folder. • Loose pages will not be accepted. • All teams members will receive the same grade, unless the team feels that a team member did not contribute.

  18. Self Managed Teams • Teams are empowered to resolve their own conflicts. • If a team member doesn’t contribute, give me a note with the team member’s name and include • grade on assignment you think the team member should receive, • brief statement of why, • have all other team members sign it. • Provide all team member with copy of note. • I will assign this grade.

  21. Homework (HW) • See web site for “List of Assignments” • Chapters covered, • HW assignments, • Due dates. • List will be updated weekly. • HW • Problems and cases in text • Answers to odd number problems in back of text. • Supplementary problems posted on web site.

  22. Homework (HW) • You may discuss HW with team members. • HW is to be written individually. • Some HW solutions will be discussed in class. • I will post solutions to HW on web site. • Do not copy my solutions as presented in class or posted on web site. • You may make notes on your solution.

  23. Homework (HW) • HW is • Due on day the final exam • Must be in a folder • Loose or stapled pages will not be accepted.

  24. Exams • Closed book • You may have one 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of notes, one or both side, for each exam. • Exams are multiple choice but may include short essay questions and/or problems. • Multiple versions of each exam will be given.

Exams • No make ups • If you miss the midterm, weight of midterm (30%) will be divided between final (now worth an extra 15%) and an assigned paper, worth 15%. • If you miss the final exam, you’ll receive an F in the course. • Final is cumulative. • You must take mid term and final with section in which you are enrolled.

Class Conduct • If you come to class, do not leave in the middle of class. • If you have an appointment and must leave before the class is over, let me know and sit in the back. • If you leave in middle of class and do not let me know, I will deduct 5 grade points from your score. • If you are late to class, sit in the back, but don’t make a habit of being late.

  30. Class Conduct • Turn off cell phones and pagers. • OK to drink in class, but no eating. • No side conversations in class. • If you talk to your neighbor, I will ask you be stop talking. • If you continue, I will ask you to leave class.

  31. Academic integrity • All students at CSUN have an inherent responsibility to uphold University principles of academic integrity and to support each other and the faculty in maintaining a classroom atmosphere that is conductive to orderly and honest conduct. • Students are expected to be familiar with the academic integrity guidelines found in the CSUN Catalog.

  32. Academic integrity • Any incident of cheating and/or plagiarism will result in a course grade of F and be reported to the Associate Dean of the College. • Incident becomes a permanent part of your record. • Don’t do it!
