  3. Words To Know! • Epidermis- the outer layer of the skin. • Dermis- the inner layer of the skin. • Melanin- cells in epidermis that give the skin its color. Freckles are spots of melanin.

  4. Functions Of The Skin • Skin protects you from germs. • Skin controls body temperature. • Skin is a shield against water. • Nerve endings in the skin allow you to feel temperature, pressure, and pain.

  5. The Skin • Melanin consists of cells in the epidermis that give color to the skin. • Sweat glands allow sweat to escape from skin through pores.

  6. The Skin • The dermis includes blood vessels, nerve endings, and hair roots. • Oil glands in the dermis keep your skin soft and waterproof.

  7. Taking Care Of Your Skin • Keep your skin clean. Regular washing with soap. • Protect your skin from the sun. Use sunscreens. • Eat a balanced diet. • Get enough exercise and sleep.

  8. Skin Problems • Acne- is the skin condition caused by overly active oil glands. • Dermatologist- a doctor who treats skin disorders.

  9. Healthy Hair • All you need to do is wash it often and brush it regularly. • Washing: use a shampoo. Let your hair dry by itself. • Brushing: brushing once a day helps spread the natural oils down the hair shaft.

  10. Hair and Scalp Problems • Dandruff- is a flaking of the outer layer of dead skin cells. Common scalp problem caused by dry scalp. • At times an itchy scalp is caused by head lice. These are tiny insects that live in the hair.
