  3. The American Civil War left over ___________ dead (_________war in US History). Close to ½ of all men who fought became _________ (killed or wounded). Southerners saw it as a war of independence over a new __________ ___________. Northerners saw it as a war to restore a __________ union and apply morality to a dysfunctional South. Welcome to War….

  4. A new kind of war… • After Fort Sumter fell, Lincoln sent __________to put down a “___________”. • ___________were still in doubt but the rest were not – the South succeeded and the North prepared for war.

  6. Southern Delusion… • South lived deluded lives. They believed that “________ ________”. Again with the modernization of war fair it didn’t happen.

  14. Border States • Who were they (page 340). • There were ‘border states’ that stayed in the Union (________ _______) even though many in the states had many conflicting alliances, some had slaver, some fought for the confederacy, nearly all had conflict.

Lincoln holds Maryland • DC was surrounded on 3 sides by _____. • Lincoln knew he would have to suspend some parts of the __________ to save the whole thing • In MD – he imposed ___________, supressed Newspapers, arrested civilians, and evne refused to let them appear before a civilian judge (suspending ______________________– which allows a judge to free an individual who is unfairly incarcerated.
