  2. Tornadoes Main Menu Fujita Scale Types Of Tornadoes Review These Four Main Points and when you’re done you can start the quiz Basic Tornado Information Tornado Alley Quiz Page

  3. Fujita Scale • The Fujita scale is a system of classifying tornadoes giving them a F-scale number factoring in wind speed and type of damage done.

  4. The Fujita Scale F-Scale NumberIntensity Phase F0 Gale Tornado F1 Moderate Tornado F2 Significant Tornado F3 Severe Tornado F4 Devastating Tornado F5 Incredible Tornado F6 Inconceivable Tornado

  5. Fujita Scale F0 Tornado: Wind Speed: 40-72 MPH Type of Damage Done: Some damage to chimneys; breaks branches off trees; pushes over shallow-rooted trees; damages sign boards

  6. Fujita Scale F1 Tornado: Wind Speed: 73-112 MPH Type of Damage Done: Peels surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving cars pushed off the roads; attached garages may be destroyed

  7. Fujita Scale F2 Tornado: Wind Speed: 113-157 MPH Type of Damage Done: Considerable damage; Roofs torn off frame houses; mobile homes demolished; boxcars pushed over; large trees snapped or uprooted; light object missiles generated

  8. Fujita Scale F3 Tornado: Wind Speed: 158-206 MPH Type of Damage Done: Roof and some walls torn off well constucted houses; trains overturned; most trees in forest are uprooted

  9. Fujita Scale F4 Tornado: Wind Speed: 207-260 MPH Type of Damage Done: Well-constructed houses leveled; structures with weak foundations blown off some distance; cars thrown; large missiles generated

  10. Fujita Scale F5 Tornado Wind Speed: 261-318 MPH Type of Damage Done: Strong frame houses lifted off foundations and carried considerable distances; automobile missiles fly through air in excess of 100 meters; trees debarked

  11. Fujita Scale F6 Tornado Wind Speed: 319-379 MPH Type of Damage Done: Winds are unlikely; would be hard to tell difference from F4 and F5 Tornadoes; missiles, such as cars and refrigerators would do serious secondary damage

  12. Basic Tornado Information • Tornadoes are dark funnel-shaped clouds made up of violently rotating winds that can reach speeds of up to 300 MPH. • Tornadoes are formed by giant thunderstorms known as “supercells.”

  13. Tornado AlleyThe following is a picture of where tornado alley is located.

  14. Tornado Alley • Tornado Alley is the area in which the majority of tornadoes have happened in the United States and where they have the best chance of happening. • Tornado Alley is located in the Mid-Western part of the United States in the plains from the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachian Mountains.

  17. Review Damage F0: minor damage to chimneys and trees F1: damage to roofs and cars pushed off roads F2: considerable damage to cars and trees F3: walls and roofs torn off houses; trees uprooted F4: houses leveled; cars thrown and large missiles generated F5: houses thrown, trees thrown F6: unimaginable damage Back to Quiz Page

  23. Quiz Question # 1: What is the name of the system used for classifying tornadoes? • Ferocity Scale • Tornado Scale • Fujita Scale • Willy’s Wild & Wacky Tornado Scale

  24. Incorrect Nice try, but that’s not quite right. Hint: It is a scale using F0 to F5 Try Again

  25. Correct! Awesome Job! The Fujita Scale is the name of the system used to classify tornadoes. Next Question

  26. Quiz Question # 2: What is the F-Scale number of the least destructive tornado? • F5 • F0 • F1 • F6

  27. Incorrect That was a good try, but it wasn’t correct. Hint: The lowest number is the least severe going to the biggest number which is the most severe. Try Again

  28. Correct! Awesome Job! You must have really paid attention! Next Question

  29. Quiz Question # 3: What F-Scale number tornado’s intensity phase is known as a severe tornado? • F6 • F4 • F5 • F3

  30. Incorrect Sorry, but that was not the right answer. Look at the hint and try again. Hint: The Wind speed of this tornado is 158-206 MPH Try Again

  31. Correct! Super Fantastic Job! A Severe tornado is classified as an F3 tornado. Next Question

  32. Quiz Question # 4: What Tornado causes minor damage to chimneys and trees? • Gale Tornado • Moderate Tornado • Incredible Tornado • Significant Tornado

  33. Incorrect You got it wrong this time, but I’m sure you can try again and get it right! Hint: It is a F0 tornado that causes minor damage to chimneys and trees. Try Again

  34. Correct! You Aced that question! F0(Gale Tornadoes) cause that kind of damage. Next Question

  35. Quiz Question # 5: Which type of tornado has a wind speed range of 207-260 MPH? • F6 • F5 • F2 • F4

  36. Incorrect Study the hint and you can try again and get it right! Hint: A tornado with wind speeds from 207-260 MPH is also known as a Devastating Tornado Try Again

  37. Correct! Congratulations! You are so smart! A tornado with a wind speed of 207-260 MPH is a F4 tornado. Next Question

  38. Quiz Question # 6: What tornado causes well-constructed houses to be leveled? • F2 • F0 • F4 • F5

  39. Incorrect It’s ok, you can do better next time! Hint: It is called a devastating tornado. Try Again

  40. Correct Awesome Job. You are spectacular! An F4 tornado causes well-constructed houses to be leveled. Next Question

  41. Quiz Question # 7: What is the wind speed of a F1 Tornado? • 73-112 MPH • 207-260 MPH • 113-157 MPH • 40-72 MPH
