(1904-1989) Barcelona Spain • He is considered a painter, sculptor, graphic artist and designer • He prides himself on Eccentricity and Exhibitionism • He calls his work “Critical Paranoia” instead of insane or crazy • Thinks that one should create “genuine delusion” while keeping in mind that your reason and rationale is temporarily suspended
Dali had a brother who shared the same name, but died on his birthday. • His parents, who were prominent people, told him that he was the reincarnation of his brother • Dali’s mother died of breast cancer, and his father married his mother’s sister • Dali did not oppose the marriage.
1929 he met a woman named Gala, whom he called his “muse” she was a german immigrant 12 years older than him and was married to a poet who was also part of the surrealist movement • Dali’s father was outraged by his new love, and his outrageous involvement with the surrealists • He disowned him and told him to never return • They were married that same year and he devoted everything to her.
1984~When Gala died in he gave up all will to live, and spent 5 years with dramatic wasted attempts at suicide • Ironically he finally died in 1989 listening to his favorite artist’s record quietly in his sleep • The irony is that his death was so quite while his life was so loud. • Surrealist artists felt they needed no explanation of their reason or art, but Dali pushed every button possible and later was kicked out of the group
The Persistence of time • Gives the idea that time is rigid and deterministic, that time is a constraint • How do you see contridiction in this picture?
