Long Range Planning Long range plans serves as a curriculum road map. Long range planning enables teachers to: • see the year as a whole • focus on overall expectations for the year • organize the curriculum for balance • integrate across subjects • allows for the use of and sharing of resources “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!”
Long Range Planning • There are many templates for organizing the long term plan for the year. Refer to Creating the Dynamic Classroom p.44-50. Blackline masters: In the back of the text, find the CD which contains the blackline masters. Curriculum Theory & Methods p. 149 Handouts:

Long Range Planning What do You do? • Envision your year at a glance. • Decide on the sequential path you would like to follow. • Ensure a balance among the main curriculum areas…content strands.
Long Range Planning • Choose one curriculum area with which to begin your planning (usually Social Studies or Science). Decide on the topics/themes you will cover and estimate the length of time you will need to complete the topic/theme. • Decide when you will address each of the topics/themes.
Long Range Planning • Consider the availability of resources and materials and possible human resources. • Look for links among various curriculum areas (integration). • Consider how school or district-wide planning will have an impact on your classroom long term plans. • Ensure that you have considered all curriculum area.

Long Range Planning • Develop the big ideas/enduring understandings from the clustered expectations from each grade and look for those that match. • Plan to offer integrated units based on the common ideas/enduring understandings.
Long Range Planning • Decide when these units will be delivered. • Consider those topics that cannot be integrated and decide when they will be delivered separately to each grade level.
