GHS Wall of Fame • On January 20, 1975 he was sworn in as Solicitor for the 13th Circuit Court • He is most known for his service under Ronald Reagan • Reagan first appointed him US District Judge • Wilkins was the first Federal judge appointed by Reagan • He was also named Chairman of the US Sentencing Commission by Reagan in 1985

Accomplishments • He serves as the Chief justice of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals • Wilkins served as legislative assistant to former Senator Strom Thurmond • He is also a member of the following: • Young Men's Christian Association    South Carolina Bar(1967)    US Supreme Court Bar(1970)    Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity    Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity Strom Thurmond Foundation (Trustee)

  4. Education • After high school, Judge Wilkins attended Davidson College, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree • After graduating in 1964, he attended law school at the University of South Carolina • He graduated with his JD in 1967

  5. Background • Wilkins was born on March 29, 1942, in Anderson, SC • Wilkins is the son of William Walter Wilkins and Evelyn Wilkins • He is the brother of David Wilkins • Now he lives with his wife along with their three children

  7. Interview Answers • Judge Wilkins’ fondest memory of Greenville High was when his varsity tennis team defeated the University of North Carolina’s freshman tennis team. Legendary GHS tennis coach Wilton McKinney was a great influence on him. • Judge Wilkins’ goal while at GHS was to prepare himself with rigorous courses to prepare for college and law school. From a young age, Wilkins knew he wanted to become a trial lawyer. • The highlight of Judge Wilkins’ career was being elected Chief Justice of the United States Fourth Circuit. He feels honored to serve in this position to this day. • There are several great influences in Judge Wilkins’ life. The greatest is his grandmother, who provided him with many valuable life lessons. Another is his parents, who supported him throughout his childhood. And last was Senator Strom Thurmond. After returning from the army, Wilkins began working for the senator, from whom he learned many legal and political attributes.
