  3. Johns Hopkins University Business Plan Competition Overview • First launched in the 1998 - 1999 academic year by the W.P. Carey Program in Entrepreneurship and Management (now part of the Center for Leadership Education), started as a competition just for full-time undergraduate students. • The competition is now open to all full-time, part-time, and post-doc students from any of the academic divisions of the University. • Highly qualified judges from a variety of business fields are selected to evaluate students’ executive summaries, business plans and presentations. Categories • Each business plans may be submitted to only one of the following categories: • Medical Technologies/Life Sciences (includes Biotechnology and Medical Devices) • General Business • Social Enterprises

  5. Johns Hopkins University Business Plan Competition Rules Participation • At least one team member has to be an enrolled student (either full-time or part-time) in one of the academic divisions at Johns Hopkins University. • Student can enter as an individual or with other team members. • If the team consists of non-Hopkins members, the Hopkins' student(s) must participate in the presentation if the team makes it to the semi-finals and finals. Pre-Existing Companies • Teams may submit business plans for pre-existing companies, provided that: • The company is pre-profit • The company has received less than $10,000 in outside investment. Re-Entering the Competition in the Future • Business plans that have placed first, second, or third in any category in any previous years of the Hopkins' Business Plan Competition may not re-enter, even if the plan has been substantially changed.

Johns Hopkins University Business Plan Competition Key Dates • Business Concept & Strategy Round • Friday, February 15, 2013: Business Concept & Strategy and Optional but Strongly Encouraged Video Pitch Submission • Friday, February 22, 2013: Sixteen Semi-Finalist teams in each category are announced • Small Business Plan Round • Friday, March 1, 2013: Small business plans are due (3 to 5 pages) • Friday, March 8, 2013: Eight Finalist teams in each category announced • Full Written Business Plan Round • Friday, March 22, 2013: Full written business plans due (15-20 pgs.) • Final Presentation Round and Winners Announced • Friday, April 12, 2013 • 7 Minute Presentation • 8 Minute Question & Answer by the judges

  7. Johns Hopkins University Business Plan Competition Initial Round – Business Concept & Strategy The Business Concept and Strategy is a 1-2 page summary of your business idea. It should identify the problem your business addresses, the target market and competitive advantage of your business. The Business Concept and Strategy must be submitted via YouNoodle by Friday, February 15, 2013 b y 12:00 pm. While not required, entrants are strongly encouraged to include a two minute video elevator pitch with their Business Concept and Strategy (via VIMEO or YOUTUBE link). The eligible student should be featured in the video pitch. Sixteen Semi-Finalists per category will be announced on Friday, February 22, 2013.
