  1. 16th June, 1999 DMEM Research Presentation Day Measuring Product Development Performance Frank O’ Donnell CAD Centre

  2. PhD in Design. Part-time (Nov. 1995). Supervisor: Dr A Duffy. Currently: Finalising Experiments Writing-up. Status

  3. Research Aim To develop an approach for measuring the performance of the Product Development Process.

  4. Identify those factors which affect performance. Evaluate impact of innovations. Define strengths and weaknesses. Provide a basis for continuous improvement. Achieve recognition of high performance. Why Measure PD Performance?

  5. Research Review • Assumed definitions/vague terminology. • No fundamental and generic model. • “Black-box” treatment of PD. • Metrics varied and unrelated. • Retrospective not prescriptive. • Studies not goal related.

  6. What is PD Performance? Combined Measure of Efficiency andEffectiveness

  7. Goals/ Constraints Effectiveness Product Development Input Output Efficiency Resources A Generic Performance Model

  8. RANGE LEVEL Product Development Program Project A Phasei Activityi Scope of Analysis

  9. Coherence Critical Aspect of Performance Measurement in Product Development Alignment Within and Across : Product Goals and Process Goals

  15. Future Work • Further analysis of case studies. • Evolution of model and audit tool. • Completion of thesis.

  16. Summary • PD Performance is not adequately understood or supported. • Model and approach based on efficiency and effectiveness is proposed. • Increased understanding can have wide ranging research impact.
