  1. NASA’s STEP for Aerospace Workshop • Using STEP for Engineering, Fabrication and Construction of Industrial Facilities • Mark Palmer • Computer Integrated Construction Group • National Institute of Standards and Technology • e-mail: mark.palmer@nist.gov • January 17, 2001

  2. Agenda • Why develop information standards for the process plant industries? • STEP APs for process plant • Industry use of AP 227 • Extending AP 227 capabilities for other industries

  3. Stakeholders in the Process Plant Industries • Process Industries includes: • chemical, gas processing, petrochemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, power generation • food &beverage, pulp & paper, water & water processing • Process Plant Industries include: • owners/operators of process plants • engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies • equipment and component suppliers • information technology suppliers

  4. Equipment Vendors Production Design Pre-Project Planning Construction Construction Subcontractors Plant Operations & Maintenance Maintenance Contractors Process Plant Data Cycle ItsaRecycle Process ! MajorInterfaces Business Opportunities (R&D)

  5. Need for Information Exchange Standards • Industry faces heterogeneous CAD/CAE environment -- in constant state of flux • Process plant typical life 25-50 years • CAE/CAD technology cycle 5-10 years • Technical information is reused over the life of the project, process, and plant • Large savings possible when engineering, procurement, construction, and operation can use diverse CAE/CAD and ERP systems • Standards enable these savings

  6. What is a STEP Application Protocol? • AP: defines the usage of STEP for a defined application context • driven by industry information requirements • uses activity modeling, usage scenarios, and information modeling • specifies conformance requirements for testing implementations • Enables reliable information exchange

  7. Management Activities Regulatory Bodies Produce and Maintain Financial Case Control Project Obtain Agreement with Regulatory Bodies Process Plant Industries Information Flows Produce Conceptual Process Design Decommission Plant Commission Plant Operate Plant Produce Detailed Process Design Produce Conceptual Engineering Design (Front End) Produce Detailed Engineering Design Construct Plant Pre-commission Maintain Plant and Equipment Demolish Plant and Restore Site Suppliers and Fabricators Procure and Control Equipment, Material and Services

  8. Information Standards for the Process Plant Industries • Industry leaders exploiting IT and data exchange to improve project and plant performance • hindered by lack of effective exchange standards for process models, P&IDs, 3D plant models and life cycle information • Move to international standards and broader industry collaboration • PIEBASE - global coordination among industry consortia: ECOM, EPISTLE, pdXi, PISTEP, PlantEC, PlantSTEP, POSC, POSC/CAESAR, USPI-NL,… • Segments of the process plant industries are defining standards for sharing information • STEP application protocols and data warehouse capabilities

  9. APs for the Process Plant Industries • AP 212, Electrotechnical Design and Installation • AP 221, Functional Data and their Schematic Representation for Process Plant • AP 227, Plant Spatial Configuration • AP 231, Process Design and Process Specifications of Major Equipment (cancelled)

  10. AP 227 - Plant Spatial Configuration • Scope: 3D plant design • emphasis on spatial layout and piping design • includes physical and functional characteristics • developed by PlantSTEP and NIST • Status: • International Standard (IS) sent to ISO • Delivery of commercial implementations: • Dassault / IBM - CCPlant: IS implementation • Bentley - PlantSpace (MicroStation): 2001 • Cadcentre - PDMS: in development • Intergraph - participating in ESTEP AP 227 project • STEP Tools - AP 227 viewer • Merck requirement for CAD/CAE systems and pilot project • AP 227 requirement for plant CAD/CAE purchases • Navy requirement for delivery of piping systems data • NASA requirement for plant CAD/CAE purchases

  11. Scope of AP 227- Plant Spatial Configuration Management Activities Regulatory Bodies Produce and Maintain Financial Case Control Project Obtain Agreement with Regulatory Bodies Produce Conceptual Process Design Decommission Plant Commission Plant Operate Plant Produce Detailed Process Design AP 227 Produce Conceptual Engineering Design (Front End) Produce Detailed Engineering Design Construct Plant Pre-commission Maintain Plant and Equipment Demolish Plant and Restore Site AP 227 - Plant Design Suppliers and Fabricators Procure and Control Equipment, Material and Services Note: Limited capabilities provided for constructing and maintaining plant.

  12. Usage Scenarios for AP 227 Edition 1 • Exchange of piping components and equipment designs • Exchange of piping assemblies and systems spatial layout, with references to catalogs • Exchange of interference analysis results • Exchange of changes to piping systems and plant layout • Exchange of piping installation information • Exchange of modules of plant designs • Exchange of as built plant configurations

  13. AP 227 Demonstration Example

  14. Example AP 227 file

  15. Broader Industry Adoption of AP 227 • After successes in process plant, U.S. Navy and shipbuilding companies adopted AP 227 • assessed AP 227 and determined sufficient foundation • funding a Ship Piping Guide for AP 227 • U.S. MARITECH Shipbuilding Program • ESTEP project is working on AP 227 edition 2 • add more information for HVAC, pipe flow analysis, hanger and support details, catalog referencing, PMI • More commercial implementations in 2001 • Other companies are making AP 227 a requirement for CAD/CAE system purchases and a tool for improving project delivery and information re-use

  16. Extending AP 227 for Greater Benefits • Edition 2 project to extend AP 227 capabilities • process plant, piping fabricators and shipbuilding • Piping shop fabrication and inspection • Piping installation • HVAC design and installation • Input for pipe and HVAC flow / stress analyses • Support and hanger details • Cableway spatial design and installation • Positive material identification • Ship unique information
