Fire Legislation General Fire Safety Slide 3 The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 • This is the legislation which covers fire safety requirements in public places • Commonly known as the RRO • Came into force on 1 October 2006 • Applies to all workplaces • Applies to premises where the public or others have access

4. Employers Responsibilities Employees have responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to:- • Act sensibly so as not to create danger to themselves or others • Tell superiors if someone acts irresponsibly • Co-operate with their employer i.e. - follow instructions - attend training - use equipment as instructed General Fire Safety Slide 4

5. Penalties General Fire Safety Slide 5 Employees/Employers can be penalised for non-compliance:- • Up to £5,000 fine in Magistrates Court • Unlimited fines if prosecuted in Crown Court • Up to 2 years imprisonment • Or both

7. The Fire Triangle Sources of Heat • Friction, electricity, flames (burning matches, cigarettes, gas flame), heating systems, hot surfaces (e.g. light bulbs near a curtain) Sources of Fuel (combustible materials) • Paper, cardboard, wood, oil, furniture, clothes, chemicals Sources of Oxygen • Oxygen is everywhere General Fire Safety Slide 7

8. Sources of Fire Fire can start for many reasons including:- • Faulty electrical equipment • Deep fat fryers overheating • Cigarettes dropped and left to smoulder on furniture • Open flames on stoves • Gas explosions • Flammable materials stored near to a heat source General Fire Safety Slide 8

9. Combustible Items They must not be stored in corridors or stair wells or in electrical cupboards because: • Routes must be kept clear of items at all times • If they are burning they may trap someone • If there is a spark they could catch light and start a fire (electrical cupboards) • They are accessible for arsonists General Fire Safety Slide 9

10. Methods of Fire Extinction • Remove one side of the triangle • Remove the heat or cooling • Remove the fuel or starving • Remove or limit the air/oxygen or smothering General Fire Safety Slide 10

11. How Can Fire Spread? Conduction e.g. metal heating from one end to the other setting something alight Convection e.g. hot air rises increasing the temperature Radiation e.g. rays of the sun can set fire to things through glass Physical Transport e.g. burning materials falling onto new sources of fuel General Fire Safety Slide 11

12. What To Do If You Discover A Fire 1. Break glass/raise the alarm 2. DO NOT TACKLE THE FIRE UNLESS: • You are trained and feel confident • It is safe so to do (your exit is not blocked) • The fire is small (e.g. in a waste paper basket) – but remember a fire can grow quickly! 3. Leave by the nearest exit and go to the assembly point We can replace a building, but we cannot replace you General Fire Safety Slide 12

13. Evacuation • On hearing the fire alarms you must evacuate the building - closing all windows - turning off stoves, lights etc • DO NOT: - collect your belongings - do not run, do not use lifts - do not leave the assembly point until the Senior Manager has instructed you to do so • DO: - assist guests to evacuate the building - evacuate by the nearest exit - assemble at the assembly point Never re-enter the building until instructed that it is safe to do so by the Fire Brigade General Fire Safety Slide 13

14. Fire Evacuation For People With Disabilities • Deaf/hard of hearing • Blind/visually impaired • Wheelchair bound • Other illnesses General Fire Safety Slide 14

Means of Escape/Corridors • Must be free from obstructions • Fire doors must be kept closed or on magnetic devices • Have no damage to walls or doors • Have no combustible items stored/left in them.
