  4. Objects • Cars • Clothing • Cell phones • Cooking utensils • Beliefs • family patterns, • ideas • language, • Political/economic systems • Rules • skills • work practices

  5. Society vs. Culture Society Culture The products people create within • A group of people who a have organized in such a way to share a common culture

  6. Components of Culture • 1. Technology- • the combination of material culture (objects) and rules • Symbols- • Anything that represents something else • 3. Language

  8. Cultural components • 4. Values • Shared beliefs over what is right and wrong, good or bad, desirable and undesirable

  9. Bell Work, Gentlemen, which would you use and why? Ladies, if you were a gentleman which one would you go to Norms- shared rules of conduct that people follow in shared situations Taboo Mores Norms that describe socially acceptable behavior but do not have great moral significance Folkways • Norms that have great moral significance b/c violation of these rules endangers societies well-being • Norms that are so strong that violating them results in extreme disgust Societies make laws or written rules of conduct to enforce these ideas

Exit Slip - • Read Chapter 2 section 1 if you need to get a better idea of what we’ve talked about • Focus on Writing • Write two paragraphs describing a culture to within the United States to which you belong. For example write about a club or team of which you are a part of. Things to include: • Material & non-material culture • Technology • Symbols • Language • Values (mores, folkways, taboos etc…)

Ethnocentrism- the belief that one’s own culture and group are superior to others Cultural Relativism- the idea that culture should be judged by their own standards rather than by applying the standards of another culture

  15. Reading about different cultures • As you read the article take note on the following concerning the culture: • Social Folkways, Mores & Taboos • Beliefs& Values • material & Non material culture

Cultural Variation Although Cultures have many universal traits, there are groups that do not follow every norm within every society, these are called SUBCULTURES- groups that share values, norms, and behaviors that are not shared by the entire population Examples? age, gender, ethnic, religious political, socioeconomic status & occupational

  18. Cultural Variation • subcultures share values with the wider culture they are a part of, Counter Cultures do not. • Counterculture- subcultures whose practices, beliefs, norms and values are consciously intended to challenge the values and norms of wider society • Examples?

Perspectives on Culture • Functionalist- • Culture reflects and enforces society’s central values. • It encourages stability by integrating individuals into society. • Subcultures relieve discontent of subgroups • Ethnocentrism encourages group unity • Conflict • Culture reflects and enforces the values of those who hold power • It encourages and maintains social inequality • Subcultures and counter cultures challenge those in power • Ethnocentrism encourages discrimination against he powerless • Interactionism • Culture is maintained and modified through everyday social interactions • Interaction among subcultural groups helps to transmit customs and traditions and also introduces new cultural meaning systems

  20. Homework • Read Chapter 2 Section 3 44-47 and answer the following • What are traditional American Values? • How have these values changes since the 1970s?
