Information & Tips • Main sources of funding, research councils, institutional studentships / scholarships, loans, charities • What you need to fund: programme fees Int’l students (£6130 - £13290) Home / EU (£3720 – 6320), and living expenses approx. £7000 - £8000 p.a. • Many streams of funding for postgraduate study, can be difficult to access and… • Competition for postgraduate funding is fierce, do not rely on funding, but… • thousands are successful every year so don’t be put off applying, apply early, target application, be persistent. • Check what the institution is offering • Consider the alternatives, salary and employments rates – worth the investment? • Make sure you contact your department before you make an application, the department chooses the candidates to put forward to the research council for funding.

Research Councils: Who are they? • Arts &Humanities Research Council (AHRC) • Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC ) • Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) • Medical Research Council (MRC) • Particle Physics and Anatomy Research (PPARC)

  5. Research Councils: Studentships • AHRC makes up to 1700 awards per annum. Make your AHRC application through your department: • Three types of studentship • Research Preparation Masters Scheme. Research foundation prior to PhD • Professional Preparation Master’s Scheme. MA/PGDip to develop high level skills for professional practice. • Doctoral Awards Competition Up to 3 years leading to a doctoral degree.

Research Councils: Studentships • ESRC, UK’s largest funding body for research into social and economic issues. • ‘1+3’ Studentships: One year research training, and the 3 years PhD study. • ‘+3’ Studentships: 3 year PhD programme • ‘CASE’: Funds Social Science projects in collaboration with business / companies. PhD students gain opportunity to work outside academic environment.

  7. Research Councils: General Rules • Understand and Prepare: Different requirements for application process, understand the process, be prepared before starting your application. Be early: Differing deadlines, applications in the spring before year of entry. • Secure your place: Requirement that you have been offered and accepted a place. Submit course application in winter / early spring. • Check Criteria: Must meet every aspect of the eligibility criteria. Qualifications and residency criteria. • Spend Time: Your application is your only opportunity to market you skills, interests and qualifications. You can only apply to one research council. • Referee: Make sure your referee is fully briefed about your application, your study intentions. • Target the right source: Different research councils fund different research areas, make sure the funding body you apply to is appropriate. • Contingency: Always look for alternative sources of funding in case your application is not successful.

Goldsmiths Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme • 30 x Scholarships £1000 for Home /EU students • 16 x International Scholarships of £1500 for International Students • 5 x Country Specific Scholarships £1000 (India, Russia, Hong Kong, Pakistan, China, Chile) • 2 x International Research Scholarships £2000

  9. Loans for UK Students • Career Development Loans: Between £300 - £8000 for up to 2 years study. To cover 80% of course fees, course costs, living expenses. Apply at Barclays, The Co-Operative Bank

Other Sources of Finance • Charities and Trusts: Awards often specialised and may have strict qualification / eligibility requirements. • Departmental bursaries and teaching assistants: Some academic departments may be able to offer assistance by way of fees only bursaries or via teaching assistance positions. Contact your department. • There are major sources of funding available to International students, you will need to check in your country of residences for the range of funding options available.
