  2. Lesson 1: The Road to Revolution Lesson Question: What were the events that led to the American Revolution? Lesson Learning Objective: The students will understand the sequence of events that led to the American Revolution as well as the significance of each of these events.

  3. Metaphor A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison

  4. Metaphors are different from similes. Similes use the words “like” or “as” to make their comparisons. My dad is like a general, constantly giving orders. Metaphorical comparisons are more direct and often more powerful.

  5. Examples: I have a sea of troubles. All the world’s a stage. She is the apple of my eye. He’s on a rollercoaster of emotions. You are the sunshine of my life. I would like to give him a knuckle sandwich.

  8. Table Group Discussion: Each member of the group share: • What basic conflict(s) between the British, Americans and/or Native Americans do your events reflect? • Which of these events was most important in leading to the American Revolution?

  9. Poster Planning Must haves - • A visual metaphor that says something insightful about the Road to Revolution. Definition: insight • an instance of apprehending the true nature of a thing, especially through intuitive understanding • penetrating mental vision or discernment; faculty of seeing into inner character or underlying truth. • A selection of events that are significant and consistent with the poster’s visual metaphor. • Information about each event on the poster that helps the viewer understand the Road to Revolution.

  10. Formative Assessment: Poster Analysis One paragraph Select one poster other than your own and explain its metaphor for the Road to the American Revolution. Identify what underlying truth about the events leading to the Revolution the poster reveals. Also, assess how well the events listed and described on the poster enhance the meaning of the metaphor. In addition, make at least one suggestion on how the poster could be improved, either by changing the visual metaphor in some way, or by selecting different events to list on the poster.
