Africa’s History African Families European Colonization (to settle an area & govern from afar) Europeans took the best land, controlled the govt, and Africans had little say Many Africans wanted independence African leaders had little experience with democracy Many times military leaders would take over Many live in extended families Care for the elderly Everyone takes care of the children Decisions are made together

African Traditions Africa Today brought to America • Folklore • oral stories told by a groit • Food • Okra, watermelon, yams, sweet potatoes • Medicine • small pox vaccine • C-section • Music • Jazz & Blues • Economic Issues • Colonial powers did little to build factories • No diversity in exports to other countries • Food Shortages • Famines have occurred in many countries • Literacy • Before independence, many had literacy rates in the teens • After independence, they have improved • Life Expectancy • Average= 55 yrs • AIDS has devastated sub-saharan Africa • There are an estimated 11 million orphans in Africa because of AIDS
