Purpose: • The point of this lab is to study a small ecosystem and measure how organisms modify their environment. • Research: • Ecosystem - • Primary succession - • Secondary succession - • Materials: • Pasteurized milk, test tube, pH paper, wax, marker, 5 senses • Procedure: Described in slide 5 of this presentation.
Procedure - Setup: • Obtain a test tube and a marker • Place your name on the glass of the test tube • Fill almost full with pasteurized milk • Measure the pH of the milk using pH paper. Record. Throw away pH paper! • Record the appearance, smell, consistency, texture, etc. of the milk. Make many careful observations!!! • Put a piece of wax over the top of your test tube and place in the rack – throw paper away

Daily Observation – 5 minutes: • Obtain your milk – DO NOT THROW AWAY THE WAX!!!! • Record the pH • Record your observations • Place the wax back on your tube and return • Graph the pH change for today • Return to your seat
Conclusion: • Answer the following in a 3 – 5 sentence paragraph each. • Describe how your milk changed in terms of appearance and consistency. • What was it that caused your milk to “sour?” Why is it bad to drink sour milk – details! • What kind of succession occurred in your Pasteurized milk? Explain how you know. • How could this experiment be made more valid? What are some sources of error?
