  1. Arizona Industry GCU 221 Copper, Agriculture, Ranching, High Tec, Real Estate

  2. What will happen to Arizona? Went from No. 2 state job 2006 growth to No. 49 2009 • Copper Mining • Farming • Cattle Ranching • High Tech Industry • Real Estate Which of these industries are subsidized by the government? Are they worth it?

  3. Copper Mining in Arizona • 0.5% jobs mining, generate 2% GDP • In 2009 generated $9.3 billion • 61% of US production in 2005 (EPA) • 72 mining companies operating 126 mines A highly conductive and corrosive resistant material used for coinage, wire, architecture, piping…

  4. Arizona Copper Mining: Issues • Generates more waste then mining any other material because source rock is 1% or less concentrated in copper ore. • Reclamation of slag - $50 million spent in 2009 near Superior, AZ

  5. Arizona Copper Mining: Issues • Leaching – Weak acids dissolve the copper in the ore and can contaminate soils with radionuclides. • Solvent Extraction – An organic solvent is added to the acid, binding with the copper and then physically removed. • Milling and Separation – Crushing the ore down further and separating out the best pieces. • Smelting – Ore Roasted to remove sulphur and moisture. Mixed with sand and limestone forming two layers, one the slag the other the concentrated copper.

  6. Arizona Copper Mining: Issues • Should they open a mine in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson? http://www.scenicsantaritas.org/

  7. Arizona Copper Mining: Issues • A different view.

  8. Agriculture in Arizona$9 billion industry

  9. Agriculture in Arizona

  10. Agriculture in Arizona • 2010 - with the passage of SB1070, you can be arrested for being in the country illegally • Keeping many immigrants and guest workers from coming back to agriculture jobs. • Will Arizonans, facing 9% unemployment take these jobs? • In Washington, offering $125 to $150 a day, and so far Washingtonians are not taking the jobs.

  11. Agriculture in Arizona: Issues • Soil Erosion: the loss of unprotected soil • Salinization: increased salinity of soils from irrigation (1.1 million tons of salt per year from AZ rivers, a semi-truck of salt into Phoenix every 15 seconds) • Land subsidence: cracks from groundwater withdrawal Luk Luke Air Force Base http://www.azgs.az.gov/EFC.shtml http://phoenix.gov/WATER/cassph2exec.pdf

  12. That is a scary sink hole!

  13. Cattle Ranching in Arizona$770 million industry • More money made on cattle than any other agricultural commodity • Erosion and biomass reduction are issues. • Originally ran around 20 head of cattle per acre, currently only support 7. http://www.westernwatersheds.org/arizona

  14. Tech industry in Arizona$8.8 billion payroll • Average worker earns $75,000, 85% higher than average • 116,000 high tech jobs • 52 out of every 1,000 private sector jobs are in this industry. • 6th in defense electronics management • 4th in semiconductor manufacturing http://www.techamerica.org/cyberstates-2009-arizona

  15. Tech industry: Issues • Sustainable?: Major companies supply products to the department of defense. Currently facing $500 billion or $1 trillion in cuts. • Water contamination issues: Motorola Superfund site cost over $1.5 million from excessive solvents getting in the groundwater. • Running low on American engineers to hire, looking for employees overseas. http://responsibility.motorola.com/index.php/environment/operations/remediation/sitehistory/ http://www.techamerica.org/cyberstates-2009-arizona
